NFL Draft
So how did your boys do?
I think its broadly a good thing that the Jets were aggressive... but I dont know if QB was really their biggest immediate need.

I actually liked the pats trading down for 4 picks in the 2nd. Seems like we are stockpiling a bit with 4 second round picks and a couple thirds, as well as 2 picks in most following rounds. Just noticed that Ellis Hobbs was traded, and it seems like we are trying to get the defense younger again, though there doesn't seem to be any LB's that reallly catch BB's fancy.

I'm still trying to figure out WTF the Broncos were thinking burning a first round draft choice on a running back! While they did have injuries at running back last year they do have some solid albeit not outstanding backs now, and if they really needed more they could have used a later round choice for that. I'm liking McDaniels less and less with every move he makes.

Seahawks taking Curry with #4 was a great pick for our Defense, but then the same night rescinding the franchise tag on Leroy Hill (OLB)??? I don't understand how that upgrades the team, might as well have just taken Michael Crabtree...
I'll still watch every game though and cry when they go 4-12. |

I sure hope the Jets know what they're doing.
I sure hope Mark Sanchez isn't the next Ryan Leaf

Seeing as I hate USC, and particularly Mark Sanchez, I nearly cried. I have a feeling he's going to shit his pants when he doesn't have all day to throw to wide open receivers.

I am ecstatic as a 49ers fan that they managed to get Crabtree.
While the QB and OL situation is far from solid, for once I can say they got a guy who was the consensus best at his position in the draft. Not a combine warrior like Vernon Davis was, or a guy who could be good like Rashaun Woods or Kwame Harris and never ends up doing anything. He may turn out to be a Reggie Bush or Ryan Leaf style bust, but at least I can say he was the best at the position coming out that year, so at least they made an effort to do something. I like them getting the #1 pick from Carolina next year but they usually field a solid team so I picture it being in that 20-25 range of pick.

I also loved Crabtree to SF. He was kind of having a big ego coming into this week, but I hope he really puts in work. Steve Young said, if I were him, the first thing I would do is call Jerry Rice and workout with him and learn how to play the game asap. Agreed. I used to love SF back when I was growing up, so hopefully they can make some progress to get back to greatness!
The Jets are stupid because they only had 3 picks. Not that I'm complaining, go ahead NY do your thing, get back down to the bottom of the AFC east. One less thing I have to worry about in NE.

As a Terp, I love Darrius Hayward-Bay. It's a shame that we couldn't put a better offense around him to show off his skills; he really has huge potential. But Oakland is NUTS!
The Ravens must be trying to hide something, since they managed to draft the two best stories in the draft I love the Oher pick; he's going to be a step behind Ogden when everything is said and done, which is as good as anyone can reasonably expect. The Kruger pick looks really nice, too, either as that "'tweener" guy the Ravens have turned into a series of quality players (Boulware, Thomas, Johnson) or as a full-on defensive end like Suggs. I really like what Detroit did, the Jets made a great move and despite my earlier statement I think Oakland got a keeper.

One the one hand, he doesn't appear to have been on any draft experts' boards. On the other hand, it's been reported that at least two other teams had him rated much higher then most thought (Mitchell himself said he was told by the Bears he was going to be drafted by them two picks later, and Kiper mentioned another team that had him as a third-round pick and called him a future Pro-Bowler). This is the kind of thing that isn't supposed to happen these days, but still makes the draft great. You have to have these things every couple years, whether it is the incomprehensible pick or the team running out of time or something else.

I follow it more to see where my college players go. The highest we had this year was Davon Drew, to Philly in the fourth round. He's going to surprise some people. Just like Chris Johnson last year in the first round at 24th. the drunk asshats at the ESPN Zone rated him a zero, then he led the Titans to conference championship and shredded every defense in front of him.

I'd have a lot more fun watching the draft if I actually knew any of the players.
I think I should start watching college ball next season in order to appreciate the subtleties of the spectacle of rebuilding one's team in the NFL offseason, because this year I was left scratching my head in consternation.

Also, I think the hype of the draft is fucking retarded. From draft parties, to fans going crazy watching a draft, to mr. irrelevant, its all stupid to me. I don't understand why the NFL draft has so much more hype than any other professional sports draft. Maybe that's just me being more of a baseball, basketball, and hockey fan before being a football fan...

As for basketball and hockey, it's overall popularity of the sports. The NBA and NHL drafts recently have been getting a major increase in attention and ESPN coverage, though. Also, the problem with baseball was that until recently the draft was essentially a conference call. Now, though, they are moving to a live draft at MLB Network studios. That's right: the NFL and NBA drafts are in midtown Manhattan at Radio City Music Hall and Madison Square Garden respectively; the MLB draft will be in Secaucus.

This was typical top notch sleeper drafting by the Bears, again.
Jarron Gilbert as a first pick was a shocker, for everyone. Who knew he'd still be there. Iglesias was also a surprise to me because I thought he'd be picked alot sooner. This was probably the only reason Melton didn't get picked until 105. CB D.J. Moore should make peanut and vasher work a little harder as well as provide good backup if either of them are injured. I'm a little skeptical about Knox(WR), but seeing the speed factor makes me think that the TE game is going to pick up.....alot as they open the middle of the field. Marcus Freeman is going to fit right in as backup for both Briggs and Hillenmeyer while he learns enough to start. Louis was a bit of odd decision, but considering his college career and experience at FB, it starts to make sense as we're going to see the Bears with a whole array of offensive weapons this year. Forte shocked alot of people with his skills last year and teams will look to bury that. What usually happens to Bears runners their second year? injuries, so a big FB to block should go far in reducing that possibility. Plus, alot of speed in receivers is going to force safeties to stay back a bit further, keep CBs on tighter coverage, and force LB's to expand their area of responsibility to cover both runs and midfield areas with Clark and Olsen. We're going to see a dynamic and exciting offense this year and I'm looking forward to it.

thats what happens when you've got Al 'he'll make one or two plays all year, but they'll be the most awesome plays ever' Davis making your draft choices.

As the only Pack voice I have to say I'm pretty happy with what my boys got. I was praying for Raji, who fell to us. I got a great pass rusher in Matthews who has a ton of upside. I had Jamon Meredeth rated in the fourth round so us getting him later in the draft is great. But my favorite pick is a strange one. Quinn Johnson was the best rated FB in the draft and that's not why I love him. He is old school. He doesn't want the ball (see Mclain in Balt. who is going to be a problem when ray rice gets the ball). He just wants to beat the living shit out of everyone in front of him. And he does. We've had two tweeners (LB converted to fullbacks in Kuhn and Hall) since Henderson left and I'm happy to see a guy who can knock people on their back; especially with a scat back like Brandon Jackson - who I think will take over at starter during the season unless we, sadly, pick up Edge). I gave us an A-.
