Cutler Trade To The Bears
Jay Culter has been traded to the Bears with a fifth round pick for two first rounders (2009-10), a third, and QB Kyle Orten.
What do you guys think? I'm fucked as a Pack fan. Cutler is a huge upgrade at the position for the Bears.

As a Bears fan who is no fan of Ron Turner, I'll have to wait and see. The Bears haven't had a top rank QB for so long (like ever) that I'm not sure they'll know what to do. The franchise knows defense, it always has. But offense? Time will tell.

As a Broncos fan I don't quite know what to think. I'm annoyed that we had such a good offense last year and such a bad defense and we manage to screw up the offense. We had gone almost ten years after Elway's retirement without a standout quarterback and we finally get one, and a raw rookie coach manages to screw it up. But at the same time I can't help but think Cutler was being a whiny little bitch about the whole thing. He needs to mature a little bit more but once he does he can be one of the best of his generation, if not all time. As far as who becomes the starting quarterback now for Denver, yikes, Kyle Orton or Chris Simms. I'd rather try and coax Jake Plummer out of retirement myself.

Honestly, I knew that they were in talks, but I figured they would screw it up. This trade is really beneficial in a few ways, first, it gives the Bears a chance of having a franchise QB (something they haven't had in forever) and keeping the Vikes from getting the one piece that they really needed from being the dominant force in the NFC North. They just need to focus on fixing the problems with the defense (the Babich demotion should help that) as well as making sure they have someone who's solid backing up Orlando Pace and there should be a very noticible improvement.

The Broncos definitely made out on this trade. With the O line that the Broncs have, Orton will have every opportunity to excel. If Cutler can feel at home in Chicago, the Bears will certainly take the division and with the O line signings that the Bears have done this week, the playoffs look positive.

For Denver, I have to wonder if the plan really is to have Orton be the starter, or use those first round picks to pick up a starting QB? Although the recent good college QB's have not been stellar in the NFL. The whole Cutler vs. Bronco's Management was a top story here for several days in Denver, and for sure, Cutler was looking like a real crybaby during the whole thing.

Orton will be a starter. Before his injury in chicago, he was consistently good. He needed one more week to recover and he would have been just as effective. Chicago may have a good QB now, but Orton was only going to get better. If Denver wants to move up in the conference, they should use those first round picks to pick up a Def Lineman and a linebacker and then the 3rd rounder on a Dback.

That's what I think.
Hopefully things won't go as Cutler planned right at the start and he will turn back into the huge crybaby he was in Denver. My roommate is pissed about losing Cutler as he doesn't think that Orton can do a damn thing for them. I think if Denver can get a defense at all, then they will be able to hold their own.

This seems like a pretty even trade to me. While Orton is somewhere between a capable QB and a disaster, he will probably only serve as a stopgap measure for a Denver team that seems to have a lot of problems and needs to rebuild. Denver seems to be on the way down and now is the perfect time to start over with a new coach and a whole new system. Why waste the next 3 years of Cutler on teams that are almost certain to underachieve? They managed to stockpile some draft picks and, if they are smart, will look for a QB in the draft or free agency in 2 or 3 years when the team is in a better position to win.
As for the Bears, they haven't had a quality QB in the modern era and they suck at drafting (at least in the first round), so the loss of the draft picks isn't that big of a deal. The Bears defense clearly isn't what it was a few a years ago and maybe they feel the need to get more out of the offense than they've been getting. I know they still don't have a strong receiving corps, but there are several capable WRs available as FAs and there is something to the argument that a better QB can make your WRs better. I thought it was kind of silly when the Bears picked up Muhammed a few years ago because they didn't have anyone to throw to him. Now, the prospect of them picking up a FA WR makes a lot more sense, and is probably much more attractive to FA WR. I don't think this move automatically makes the Bears a much better team, but it is a step in the right direction. And it's not like they are renting Cutler. If everything goes well, he could lock down that position for the next 10 years. This move allows the Bears to concentrate on other issues they have without the constant questions about the QB position. Look at it this way: when was the last off-season that the number one position the Bears needed to address wasn't QB? Isn't fixing that issue worth two 1st rounders and a 3rd? Especially since those 1st rounders would have almost certainly turned into underachieving RBs?
