IRB Sevens
I've been watching the Sevens matches going on at San Diego this weekend, and I was wondering if someone could explain the cup, bowl, shield, etc to me. I understand that the cup is the ultimate goal (?), but what qualifies a team for the others?
Side Note: England women played the USA women for the title earlier (England won in sudden death overtime)....as a woman I found it awesome!!! The announcers have been talking all day about the attempt to get sevens into the Olympics...As a fan of softball (former collegiate player) and baseball, I'm saddened that they were dropped, but I think it would be really cool to have rugby in for a change. It seems like there's a real world following.

Yeah, I watched a bit of the Sevens last night - my game is really Rugby League but I can see the appeal of Sevens for the Olympics as smaller countries don't need a big squad to compete. Case in point - Kenya just beat New Zealand! In a 13 or 15 a side game, that would never, ever, ever happen. Games are quick and you can watch a lot of different teams in a single afternoon or evening.
Glad you're enjoying it, it's a great game in its many formats.

you also have to remember that in 7's rugby many of the top teams dont field their best players for numerous reasons - not wanting to get injuries, or just to blood new players and see what they are made of.
i will reply a little later on this thread, im at work right now. i was at the dubai 7's a few months back, theres a thread i started here... http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/tilted-...-rugby-7s.html

Well, they've started the second day, and they explained how it works...In case someone would like to know:
The top two teams from each pool goes to the cup competition. The losers then go to the plate competition. The bottom two teams from each pool goes to the bowl competition. The losers then go to the shield competition.
