Preparing for the only game that matters this year

OSU VS michigan

The Squeelers can own the Bungels and the Clowns. The Indians and Reds can blow.... no one cares about the Cavs and LeBoob after that Yankee hat stunt....

I have heard rumors that the Big 10 plays football. Just a slower, less talented version of the one they play in the SEC.

The only game that matters? In one state, I guess. Once your conference starts playing a championship game, THAT might matter. Otherwise the best that you can hope for is to be overrated enough to get trounced by an SEC or Big 12 team.

Amaras 11-08-2008 12:48 PM

Apparently neither of you are familiar with the upcoming Grey Cup game here in Canada. Typically it is the best of ALL the championship games in any sport I've ever watched (and I've watched a helluva lot!). Most of your College football heroes end up playing in the CFL. Well, those who don't suit the NFL's preconceived idea of what a player should look like, anyway.
Warren Moon, Jeff Garcia, Doug Flutie, anyone?

The_Jazz 11-08-2008 01:13 PM

Please. If you happen to have the opportunity to see an SEC game in person, it will completely change your perspective on sport in general.

And you people don't play football any more than the Australians do. Bigger field, more players, different rules. About the only thing that it has in common is the consumption of alcohol by the fans, which is something you polar bear jockeys definitely have down pat.

Amaras 11-08-2008 01:27 PM

Jazz, you made me laugh out loud!
I almost woke the baby!

Look, one day we'll trade off, whadda ya say?

As to who plays "real" football, we have had pro's longer. We were there right at the beginning.

As to our consumption of fermented barley & hops, well..
No offence but you guys don't even drink beer. You guys drink what I used to pee out the next day.:suave:

The_Jazz 11-08-2008 01:56 PM

Pro's? Give me a break. I've heard about football on Sunday, but that's sacreligeous. Everyone knows that when a player graduates, he might as well be dead.

And real fans drink bourbon before, during and after games. Beer is what we serve the kiddies. And freshmen sorority girls that haven't learned to drink yet. No, brown liquor is pretty much a prerequisite for any real college football fan.

On a completely unrelated note, I hear that more beer is consumed on the day of OSU/Michigan than any other sporting event in the country. Which pretty much demonstrates my point, I guess.

Football is played with the feet, silly Americanski.

Actually, the Buckeyes are my favourite US team of any sort. Can't say I've ever followed a foreign team in any sport except OSU.

Grancey 11-08-2008 06:27 PM

I'm 1000 miles away down here in the SEC, but I think I can hear the corn sprouting today in Iowa.

Baltimore had a CFL team starting in 1994, in the American expansion.

Ended up the only successful of the expansion teams. Galvanized the city, probably blew away league attendance records. Went to two Grey Cups, and won one.

After two years, the Browns said they wanted to move here and become the Ravens. The Stallions have been the Montreal Allouettes ever since.

See where I'm going with this...;)

Ohio State is a top ten team (or should be) with a shot still at the BCS. Michigan is going through a rebuilding year where they lost to Utah, Toledo, and aren't going to a bowl for the first time since the mid-70s.

Yet that's all you care about?

Jeez. In a REAL rivalry, the fans of the team so far ahead would be doing whatever possible to marginalize the other team and piss off their fans :D

pan6467 11-08-2008 10:39 PM

Jazz, ya made me smile today....... thank you.

Look the Clowns are losing games they could win and all he coach can say is "well we'll play better next week."

The Bungles are the worst team in the NFL.

The Reds traded away all talent and are destined to stay behind a God forsaken Pittsburgh team.

The Indians are just lousy in even numbered years with an owner who is cheap and doesn't want a winner on the field.

The Cavs have arguably the best player in the NBA, homegrown and he wears a Yankees hat to the Jake {at the time} during a Yankees/Indians playoff game and he can't wait to leave for NY and Jay Z's team, the Nets.

Bobby Rahal's Rahal/Letterman Indycar team sucks.

The Blue Jackets in the NHL can't ever seem to make the playoffs which in he NHL is hard not to do.

So.... as an Ohio sports fan that leaves 1 team to root for.

They can't go to the NCAA Championship game and may miss the BCS all together....

BUT they can beat the fuck out of Michigan this year, so as an OHIO sports fan..... that's about all we got.

Alexa 11-08-2008 10:44 PM

I would have to say that this game has lost some of the luster considering neither team is going to win the Big 10 title and Michigan isn't even going to be bowl eligible.

Have you seen the Lions?

As for the rest you (the always lovely grancey excluded of course), all I hear are what have to be a bunch of drunk CFL fans (seriously folks, it's time for an intervention) that somehow wandered into a thread about college football and a few Big 10 fans that might be coming to terms with the fact that they cheer for the historically overrated conference in all of sports. I know it's painful, but please, Iowa performed a public service yesterday by beating PSU. We won't have another highly talented 2A high school football team suited up in the National Championship to get stomped by an SEC team this year (although it's possible that 'Bama won't make it all the way).

I do!:orly:
The original team was founded in 1872, however. You conveniently forgot about, oh, 120+ years of history:surprised:. Alouette actually means skylark, or lark, in English. They were so named in 1946. That's not even the start of Canadian football in Montreal alone, Mister Smarty Pants!

Did you know this year my city, Montreal, is hosting the 96th, yes, 96th Grey Cup game?

About as old as baseball, isn't it?
So take your apple pie, and your baseball, you guys definitely are passionate about them.
But DON'T claim football as your own, you newbies, rookies, wet behind the ears kinda guys that you are.:grumpy:
Plus, our balls are bigger.

I don't see t as a threadjack just some fun between sports fans.

In all honesty, I was expecting some Michigan fans to try to chime in but fans of lesser divisions like the SEC or minor league football leagues like the CFL who are passionate can join in too.

It's all about having fun and teasing each other.

Amaras 11-09-2008 09:37 AM

You call the CFL minor leagues? Are you crazy? You can make almost $30K a year as a second stringer up here.
So, obviously we are talking about passionate players. They aren't doing it for the money, not like your average
NCAA player (the best ones get paid waay more!).

C'mon you guys. Everyone KNOWS that the best football conference in America is the ACC.

...Ok, even I don't believe that...:p

The_Jazz 11-10-2008 05:42 PM

They play football in the ACC? I know that FSU does, but are you sure that the "football teams" aren't just extra basketball players trying to stay in shape?

Why not just say the Ivy League is where it is at/ Hell, the game of the year could be Brown taking on Columbia.

They say there are 2 teams down South Florida way that have a rivalry similar to OSU/Blue Smurfs of Michigan..... but that much like Harvard/Yale is a fairy tale told by those who are jealous of the greatest rivalry in sports.

Actually, OSU wins a share of the Big Ten title if they beat Michigan, and will have a more than decent shot at getting an at-large bid to a BCS game.

Nah, I think Penn State wins outright if they win their last game.

Nope, it just goes by W/L record. Penn State would win the tiebreaker for who gets the automatic BCS berth, but in the record books PSU and OSU would be listed as co-champions. Similarly, if Michigan State pulls an upset (and OSU wins against Michigan) then MSU and OSU will be co-champions, even though OSU completely dominated MSU.

powerclown 11-17-2008 09:08 AM

As the winningest college football team of all-time, Michigan will be slaughtered at the stake this weekend. There won't be a man, women or child left standing - the streets of Columbus will be overflowing with the bloody flotsam and jetsam of the entire Michigan football organization. I will take double the joy as my boss is a Michigan fanatic...heheheee!

The_Jazz 11-17-2008 09:27 AM

Seriously, this is like watching a bunch of elementary schoolers talk anout which one of them is a better quarterback with John Elway in the room.

powerclown 11-17-2008 11:02 AM

I lost a little respect for Elway when he divorced his wife of 18 years and married a 42 year old ex-Raider cheerleader. 42!! How badly can one screw up a perfectly good ex-superstar midlife crisis??

One of my coworkers is a UM alum.. so I like to regularly remind her that Ann Arbor is a whore. ;)

I'll actually be in Ohio for the game this weekend (and going to a party for it), so I'm pretty excited!

I lost respect for Elway when he was drafted by the Colts and basically told the team and the city of Baltimore to go fuck themselves, becoming at least a minor reason in why the team left a year later.

(It doesn't matter that it happened two months BEFORE I was born! I'm from Baltimore; it's a genetic memory, dammit!)

The_Jazz 11-17-2008 05:42 PM

Fine, replace the QB in question with one of the Manning brothers.

Still a bunch of pigs fighting over a turnip.

Amen. John Elway couldn't carry Johnny Unitas' soaking wet jockstrap, and as far as Im concerned there is no "Indianapolis" Colts or Baltimore "Ravens". Long live Bernie Kosar!

Prediction: Ohio State 63, Michigan 2

pan6467 11-22-2008 08:17 AM

Hold it the game has been canceled...... The OSU Michigan game has been canceled..... Michigan can't get past Toledo, no matter how hard they try.....
