Where do you rate Calzaghe - all time
You cant argue with his record. He has beaten everyone in front of him, he has held his title for a ridiculous amount of time.
I may be biased, cos I cant stand the guy, I think he is utterly classless - even after most of his wins you hear him on interview running down his opponent claiming he could have knocked the guy out if he didnt hurt his hand etc... In the era of alphabet championships the term champ is being devalued, but the WBO title is especially weak, and he has been allowed to fight many fights against top 20 fighters rather than the top boys in his division - and still keep his title. Who has he really beaten? A past it Eubank Lacy (a blown up light middleweight) Hopkins, who finally got old that night Kessler, a tough but limited paper champion Woodhall, a European Title level fighter at best now he wants to fight against a past it Roy Jones Jr to add another name with minimum risk. I couldnt say that Calzaghe isnt a skilled, clever, and technically gifted fighter... but I wouldnt place him in a top 10 of middleweights, let alone at all weights. He isnt in the same class as men like Robinsion, Hagler, Hearns, Leonard, Ketchel, Greb, Monzon, Jones jr, Toney.. in fact I'd rank him below Nigel Benn. It pisses me off that the UK press are touting this paper champion as one of the all time greats.
