Willis McGahee goes 23rd

Thoughts, opinions..

I've seen teams like the Bengals waste #1 pics year after year. This year included. I don't think it's that big of a risk. Knee injuries are not career enders now. Do people forget that? Although, I think the Bills needed help at other spots....... Defense.

I guess they're lookin at it like they don't need him to play right away and they can give him the time he needs to get back to 100%.

I would have to agree, the bills need a lot of help on defense, but you never know, they may see something with him that nobody else sees, guess we will just have to wait and see how he ends up playing.

I was kinda sad my Eagles didn't try to go after him, because he would have been a perfect addition to their offense in 2004.

The Bills though will probably end up repeating "He was the best guy on the board." because they signed Olandis Gary, and they just gave Travis Henry an extention, meaning they have 3 #1 running backs, they lost their #2 receiver, and also so far haven't picked up the defensive help they needed.

Just as they were about to enjoy their creamy beverage, three flies landed in each of their pints. The Englishman pushed his beer away in disgust. The Scotsman fished the fly out of his beer and continued drinking it, as if nothing had happened. The Irishman, too, picked the fly out of his drink but then held it out over the beer and yelled "SPIT IT OUT, SPIT IT OUT, YOU BASTARD!"

I was sure that Willis would drop to the bottom of the 1st or top of the 2nd. I thought he would be a good fit in Oakland, since the Raiders had 2 picks back to back. Unless Buffalo has something else in mind that we're not aware of, it's a giant risk.

That's like drafting someone out of the academies. We won't know if it's a good pick for at least 2-3 years.

It would be a good pick if the Bills didn't need so much help on defense.

Name someone who had two of three ligaments reattached and came back to play as well as before. I dare you.

Come on, this guy is going to start the season on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list, as admitted by GM Donahoe. And your gonna pay round one money to him?

Five years from now, he'll still be counting against their cap.

I don't get it either, with Henry and Gary already at RB and a very shaky D, it seemed obvious they would go after a defensive lineman or corner back but another running back, I just don't get it.

I wouldn't call Olandis Gary a #1 RB. He's a backup at best. He's started 3 games in the last 3 years. By the middle of the season, if the Bills are competitive, and McGahee is progressing faster than anyone expected, the Bills will know, and will trade Henry for defensive help while his value is still high. If not, then he goes during the offseason and McGahee starts the 2004-2005 season. Either way, McGahee, not Henry, is the Bills RB of the future.

The Bills really don't know how to draft. It's too bad for their fans, that team needs defense, defense and more defense.

McGahee has the potential to be a superstar running back, and you forget that Travis Henry can always be traded to fill up the rest of their holes once McGahee is healed and ready to play.

The Bills also picked up Takeo Spikes, so its not like they're totally ignoring their weak defense.

I would have made the same decision

I really don't think you can bank on trades with running backs, the average back in the NFL only lasts like 4 years. With injuries abound in the NFL, it's not the best decision, unless they made those trades now, while he still has definitive value.

He's only 25 years old, he's still got a while to go, even for a RB.

Even though I agree that a knee injury isn't enough to be career ending now, when picking a running back that you want as a franchise guy, you don't want to worry about him being hurt easier then anyone else. I like McGahee, but there are still questions. "Will he be able to play at the same level after the knee surgery?" "Will he have as much endurance due to any pain?" " Will this cause him to have a shorter career?"

That's just my thinking on it though. I wouldn't want to have to pay him more with those questions hanging over his head.

Travis Henry is our starter.. we got Gary as a backup.. Henry was the 5th leading rusher in the NFL last year.. we picked up Spikes who will play well with fletcher and we also picked up adams to tighten our d-line.. not to mention picking up mcgahee turned out to be a blessing since we got Kelsay in the 2nd who was projected as a late 1st and possible pick for Buffalo at 23.. Kelsay gives us a good D End with good speed.. he needs some work but i think he's gonna be solid.

the bills have done this in the past with a certain guy named.. oh yea thurman thomas who challenged most of Simpson's records..
not saying hes gonna be thurman thomas but why not take the risk when this years draft class got thin very quick and we still got kelsay in the 2nd.

Actually, the average NFL running back lasts for only 2.5 years.
(saw it on ESPN)

Actually, he's only 21, so he has a real long while to go.

I, too am puzzled over this. Why would my hometown Bills go for Willis McGahee when their depth chart in the backfield is as deep as can be? They have Travis Henry (who they just signed to an extension), Olandis Gary (who they just signed), and a few other backs who shined in last year's preseason. I can only come up with two theories on why the Bills took a flier on Willis.

1. Travis Henry is physically shaky in the eyes of Gregg Williams and Tom Donahoe. He fumbled 11 times last year, and was knocked out cold twice in games.

2. Tom Donahoe is banking on McGahee coming back strong near the end of this year, then swinging a huge deal for next year involving Henry or McGahee.

I really am puzzled.

What 'chu talkin' bout, Willis?

Just want to say that Tiki Barber fumbled like 9 times and another top rusher had 7 fumbles. So it is not like he was the only one that had a problem.

Another funny fact is that all 11 of his fumbles were recovered by the Bills.
