This is the only instant replay I'd really go for. Sure there could be a use for it on plate calls, but the majority of the time (not including the major missed call for the Rockies this year) the umps get those right. I would have loved the instant replay this year when they took away the home run Manny hit against the Indians.. at least Boston still won.

As far as the other proposals on the board.. (number of times batter can step out, plate visits etc) those need to be shot in the foot before they're even brought to the table. People know games take forever. Big fucking deal. I don't know why Baseball would even consider this move to make the game shorter when longer games means more advertising dollars for them.

As far as Curt goes.. he has transformed himself into more of a control pitcher.. but I'm just a little worried about him being the next Roger Clemens. The man already had major issues this past season.. I would rather have let Curt go back out west and tried to secure Santana. Santana is young, and while he didn't have the same year he had a year ago.. he still brings alot to the table.

Schilling will never be Roger Clemens. Schilling's too decent of a guy to fleece his team out of $28 million.

I wasn't really talking about money.. I was talking about coming back too many times and looking bad.

Ya know.. I have quite a bit of hatred for Clemens.. but I do still respect some of the things he did while in Boston. It wasn't totally his fault for the split in beantown.

Give Clemens a break. His ERA was amazing in 2006 and his peripherals backed up his stats to show it was no mirage. He tried again last season and it didn't work. There was no lack of effort from Clemens in 2007.

Congrats to CC on his CYA. Same to Braun and Pedroia for their ROY awards.

Meh, Beckett should have won the CY. Especially given the postseason performances...

I'm a bit worried about Pedroia winning the ROY. That award seems to be jinxed.

Looks like Lowell wants a 4 year deal.. I have a feeling no team is going to touch him for that long.. except for the skanks. I still think he'll end up back up in Boston. If he doesn't, I guess there's always Cabrerra from the Marlins. Although that would mean giving up some young talent to get him. I still think Boston should go after Santana.

Posada is staying with the skanks.. big surprise there. It's going to be interesting to see the interaction between him and Girardi.

Ballots have to be sent in on the last day of the season. Postseason performances therefore have nothing to do with the votes. Either pitcher would have been a fine choice. Beckett just barely beat him in ERA+ but CC did have about 40 more innings. That is a significant difference.

I don't even understand the Posada deal. Yes he was a superior player last season but he will be 40 when his contract runs out. Oh well, if any team can afford a shitty contract, the Yankees can.

Yeah I know the postseason doesn't count.. I guess a World Series ring is much more desireable than a CY award

Of course you don't understand the Posada deal. How many Yankees deals are actually understandable?? They always pay too much for too long.

I think they got scared into the Posada deal after he went public about talking to the Mets.

But as good as Posada is, he's old. They can't afford to give a catcher a long term deal when he's on the decline.

See, I view the Posada signing as just being average and not the albatross that others do. If you factor in the 11% inflation rate baseball has experienced over recent years, Posada's $13M in 2008 translates to $11.57M in 2009, $9.99M in 2010, and $8.21M in 2011. To give some perspective, Moises Alou, a 40-something outfielder, made $7.5M for the Mets last season and was mildly successful, if not average. For $8.2M in 2011, when Posada turns 40 mid-season, the Yankees have a consistent hitter and team player, who will probably move to first when Giambi departs.

For all of those wondering why A-Rod opted out and why Boras negotiated for that opt-out clause, it is because of 2001 dollars versus 2007 dollars. A-Rod was underpaid with his old contract. You have to give Boras credit for recognizing the inflation trends and protecting his client.

Don't forget, Posada is a catcher. There's a reason why when they started the old-player's baseball league in Florida twenty years ago, all players had to be at least forty...except catchers, who could be 35 (a year younger then Posada).

Johnny Bench, Javy Lopez, Mickey Cochrane, Ted Simmons, and other catchers were either done or just about done by their 10th/11th full season in the league as a catcher (most had a couple seasons with a minimum of at-bats early, and even a half-season or two).

And the fact that Jeremy Guthrie did not receive a single vote for AL ROY is a crime. I have no problem with Pedroia or Young placing where they did, but Guthrie was great for most of the season until he got hurt at the end.

Please tell me you are joking because he was nowhere close to being underpaid. He was set to make $27M/yr for three more years. $81M total.

He has a career OPS+ of 147. Players with similar offensive numbers are:

2. Albert Pujols (27) 167 $12.9M
4. Manny Ramirez (35) 154 $17.0M
5. Jim Thome* (36) 150 $14.8M
6. Vladimir Guerrero (31) 148 $14.5M
9. Lance Berkman# (31) 146 $14.5M
10. Miguel Cabrera (24) 143 $7.4M (1st arb eligible year)
Todd Helton* (33) 143 $16.6M
Chipper Jones# (35) 143 $12.3M

These are all corner IF/OF guys so the position adjustment is not worth that much extra. ARod was not even close to being overpaid. Actually, the more I think of it I'm starting to put a lot of blame toward Boras. Reports are now that he might be talking to the Steinbrenners without Boras involved.

Bonds got indicted:

Quote:
SAN FRANCISCO -- Barry Bonds was indicted Thursday for perjury and obstruction of justice, charged with lying when he told a federal grand jury that he did not knowingly use performance-enhancing drugs.

If convicted on all five counts, baseball's home run king could go to prison for up to 30 years.
I'm sorry but this is a bunch of horseshit.

anyone else find it strange that Bond's gets indited the same day his personal trainer gets out of prison??

So now we have A-rod kissing the Steinbrenner's asses without Boras. Wonder why? I guess he finally realized that there wasn't the market out there that he thought there was. Boras looks like a fucking idiot right now. I hope A-Rod does stay in a yankees uniform. He's what is wrong with that team.

Also, goddamn, they sure paid a hell of a lot of money to keep Rivera. Now I know Rivera is probably the greatest closer of all time, but it seems his best days are behind him. Add that to the fact that he just can't beat the Bo'Sox when it matters anymore.. and I don't know if I'd have spent that much on him. But then.. it is the skanks.. they love to overpay.

I thought the yanks were in a new era?? They sure seem to be doing alot of the same old shit .. they won't have much money to spend on younger players if they keep on.. and yeah.. they can say what they want about their farm team.. it's not shit compared to the Bo'Sox farm system.

As someone on another board I frequent said: "ARod tells Boras to not bother showing up for negotiations, the Yanks look like they'll be spending almost $400 Mil. without actually improving the team, Jeter apparently has tax problems and now Bonds is is being indicted.

What a great week. "

On a brighter note, Sabathia got the Cy Young, Wedge got Manager of the Year, Sizemore wins a Gold Glove, Shapiro wins TSN's executive of the year, Dolan wins a humanitarian of the year award and it looks like the Indians are willing to sign Sabathia to the big money long term contract.

The Indians will only be better next year. Life is good.

And on the Reds side.... John Allen resigns.... Life for an Ohio baseball fan can't get better than it is right now.... well, that is until the Reds are totally rebuilt and we see a Reds vs Indians WS.

It's a good thing that Sabathia gets a long term contract??

I heard today that the Yanks have offered Lowell a 4 year deal to play first base. I just don't see that deal happening. Even if it does, that still goes against everything the yankees have been saying about being a young team and embracing the future. They better hope they re-sign Pettite. Plus, I heard that Rivera wants a 4th year guaranteed now.

Here's to hoping the Bo'Sox sign Santana, re-sign Lowell for 3 years, and the skanks spend all that money and still get no where.

As I stated during the playoffs, CC has a hard time winning the BIG games but he's still young. If he can build confidence and win the big games while pitching lights out to lesser teams.... he'll be worth every penny. It has been interesting and fun to watch CC grow this far, it'd be great to see him mature win us a few rings and become the face of the Indians pitching staff for many years to come.

That said, if he flounders and can't get over the hump and chokes at the big games, then we have problems and have to see that even though he is one of the best pitchers in baseball, if he can't win the big games is he worth the money?

Also, the talk of getting a deal worked out, shows CC is serious about staying here, unlike Jim "I'll be an Indian till they rip this jersey off me" Thome, plus it demonstrates the Dolans and Shapiro were true to their word and meant it when they said "when these kids come up and perform to the levels we believe they can we'll pay them."

I've never been one for outlandish contracts, especially to pitchers who can blow out arms, and kill your budget for years. But CC does nothing but get better every year and other than out of shape Spring Training fat causing oblique muscle problems (which if CC works out a little during the Winter, won't happen) he's probably one of the best conditioned pitchers in baseball.

I say give CC the 4-5 year contract with a couple mutual option years. Then go out and sign Bartolo Colon cheaply to a 1 or 2 year deal... yes, we have pitching but you put 2 Cy Young winners with Carmona and Sowers, trade Lee for a 3rd baseman or Left Fielder...... now the caveat to all this would be Colon would have to work with Carmona and Sowers helping them mature, because as a pitcher Colon at 35 is pretty much done, he's never been healthy or the same since winning the Cy Young, but he could still have some stuff left.

Well, the Mets have themselves a catcher, though the jury is out on whether Yorvit Torreabla prove to be better than Paul LoDuca or Ramon Castro. He'll be less of a distraction in the clubhouse than LoDuca at least.

The Indians would be wise to sign CC to a deal around 5 years/$90M. Zito and Zambrano set the standard for ace pitchers at about $18M/yr. Peavy's agent has told the Padres that's what he wants so I'd assume that CC should ask for the same. I think both Peavy and CC are much better than Z and Z.

I don't think CC has any mental issues preventing him from winning a big game; it's physical. The problem starts and and ends with the "manager of the year". 40 extra IP killed CC down the stretch and he was physically spent by the time the Red Sox rolled into the ALCS. If Wedge limits CC's work down the stretch and even skip a few starts, CC is probably fresh for the playoffs.

Francona sat Okajima and limited Beckett and look how that turned out.

Good points. He did pitch a lot of innings. Once they clinched, Wedge could have eased up on him.

There's a couple problems with all of these statements about Sabathia.

1) He was better in the second-half then the first half, by 3/4 of a run in ERA. He also threw almost 26 fewer innings.

2) He had his second-best month in September while throwing his third-fewest innings. And historically, his career ERA in September is 2.88, 2/3 of a run lower then any other month.

Considering he has only appeared in one previous playoff series before this year, couldn't he just have had a bad two weeks?

I think that is the case. We should also note that he faced two of the best offenses in the Major Leagues during the playoffs. With the exception of Beckett, almost every big time major league pitcher that has logged at least a few postseason starts has a higher postseason ERA in comparison to regular season ERA. Hitters appear to be more patient with shortened swings in the postseason. Thats just an opinion.

Interesting. As an Indian fan and following CC, if you look at his career he does choke in big games. But he does mature and the next year he learns.

I'm hoping next season he does what he needs to and should he get the chance will get over the "hump" in the playoffs. He even stated in press conferences after both Bosox games, he had a game plan knew how he wanted to pitch and once on the mound it just didn't come to him.

Obviously he's a good pitcher, he just needs to get more tough in the games that matter. Pitching shutouts against KC, TB, Balt, and so on are nice but can you beat the Yankees, Bosox, Tigers, etc.?

I just love people who use the excuse "I use/do this because I LOVE the feeling/joy/happiness it brings me" and expect you to be ok with that as you watch them destroy their life blindly following. My response is, "I like to put forks in an eletrical socket, just LOVE that feeling, can't ever get enough of it, so will you let me put this copper fork in that electric socket?"
