Yzerman retires
Steve Yzerman announced his retirement from the NHL today - sad news to me, but everyone has to hang it up sometime. And sad for hockey to say goodbye to one of the classiest players out there. So, in appreciation of Stevie I thought I'd open a thread to say goodbye to him and perhaps for everyone to throw in a favorite Yzerman moment or story.
My favorites: seeing him hoist the Cup for the first time and actually getting to see him play live. The first time I saw him play in person he scored 2 goals and had an assist. Great for me, since he's been my favorite player for as long as I can remember. So, who else is going to miss him? ![]() |

It will be an emotional night when they hang #19 in the rafters.
I think he is one of the classiest players to ever lace up the skates. I just hope they wave the 3-year waiting period like the did for Gretzky and just usher him in the Hall of Fame. I mean, come on, is there any doubt?

There hasn't been a season that I have watched hockey that didn't include Steve Yzerman. He was the reason I started watching and playing hockey as a six year old growing up in Flint, and the reason I continued to love hockey even after I realized I wasn't very good at it as a teenager. When I went to college, the first thing I did to decorate my room, much to the dismay of my Colorado fan roomate, was install my life size stand up of Yzerman right next to the tv. Then over the past few years, watching him still play well enough to be a top 6 forward, still with the fire of a champion in his eyes, and realizing he was doing it all on one leg, was amazing. And while I continue to love hockey, love living and dying with the Red Wings every season, I just know that I won't ever have the same emotional attachment to it all without the Captain around to will his team to victory. It's a sad day for my household, the Red Wings, and hockey in general.
on a less somber note, congrats on retirement Stevie, you've earned it many times over. and as a horrific sidenote, Belfour is in town to talk contract with Holland. When it rains, it pours. |

I'll sure miss you on the ice, but have appreciated every singel shift you've played. The intensity, strengh, durability, and leadership couldn not have been matched by anyone, Period. The red wings just won't be the same without #19 on the ice, or the though of #19 being there for the rest of the team was the greatest.
Good luck off the ice, you deserve the rest from carrying the team, and a city on your shoulders for so long. |

Anyway, sounds like he's at peace with his decision, and I wish him well for his future.

A classy individual who was for too long the most underrated or underheralded player in the NHL. Toward the end of his career he got his due, but he was solid from the start. A quality classy guy. A great Canadian to boot.
