Big Ben in serious condition after motorcycle accident

PITTSBURGH --Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who last season became the youngest quarterback in NFL history to lead his team to a Super Bowl title, was badly injured in a motorcycle crash Monday morning and set for surgery.

Roethlisberger, 24, was in serious but stable condition in an operating room, said Dr. Larry Jones, chief of trauma at Mercy Hospital. Jones spoke before going into surgery, The Associated Press reported.

"He was alert and conscious" at the scene of the accident, said Ernie Roman, shift commander for the Allegheny County emergency service, told AP.

There not saying how hurt he is or what is hurt exactly, besides some head trama. I hope he is okay. You all remember what happen to Kellen Winslow when he got into a bike wreck.

I guess this is a wait and see, and hope for the best

I saw the title of this thread and thought "OH NO, not our bigben" I was very sad...

Roethlisberger spoke about his own fixation with motorcycles and his penchant for riding without a helmet.
I live in one of the few states where helmets are not mandatory... and i honestly don't have a problem with that... your choice to ride that way... but jeeez - why take chances...

This is the start of bike week at Weirs Beach in NH - a pretty big event -as of this morning, five people are dead already in bike accidents...

I get the whole wind in your hair thing.. but drive a convertible then...

Hope the guy recovers to where he was before...

Redlemon 06-12-2006 10:18 AM

Idiot.

You wear a helmet while playing football, right? That nose tackle is pretty big, but he's not as heavy or as fast as even a Geo Metro, to say nothing of the Chrysler New Yorker that you actually bounced your head off of. Think next time, Ben.

(And yes, I thought of BigBen first as well, but I wasn't on TFP at the time, so I figured it out pretty quickly. )

BigBen 06-12-2006 10:59 AM

Jesus, even I thought it was me for a second...

"I was in a motorcycle accident? Well, that would explain why I was in such pain on Saturday. It couldn't have been the 18 beers + Shots I drank."

I have an EMT buddy who calls them "Donorcycles". You can guess why.

Ample 06-12-2006 11:13 AM

Ooops sorry Ben, should have said sumfin like Steelers QB hurt.

by the way, the majority of motorcycle acidents dont cause head trama

absorbentishe 06-12-2006 11:17 AM

It's sort of ironic, that Terry Bradshaw told him to ride it when he retires after the Winslow accident, and his own coach told him to wear a helmet. It's always someone elses fault, not your own... I guess we'll have to wait and see who's fault the accident was now.

Hope he gets well soon, we need him!! Go Steelers.

Im hearing that he lost almost all of his teeth, broke his nose, 9" cut to the back of his neck, broken Jaw, and both of his kees are totally fucked.

Looks like Carlie Batch is going to carry them to the promise land this year?

ShaniFaye 06-12-2006 01:30 PM

DONT SCARE ME LIKE THAT!!!!!

sorry for the yelling but I about had a heart attack here thinking it was OUR Ben

on topic...I have NO sympathy for anyone that gets head trauma that wasnt wearing a helmet or not, its juts plain stupid IMO

pan6467 06-12-2006 01:38 PM

As a Browns fan and having gone through this with *ahem* Mr. Winslow.... I wholeheartedly can relate to the Steelers fans.... we may hate each other on the field but when the Modells took the heart out of Cleveland Pittsburgh fans worked every bit as hard to get football back into Cleveland.... (maybe it was just because you wanted a team you knew you could beat.... but....)

And as a fellow Ohio native, born and bred..... my heart and deepest sympathies go to Ben and his family.

cookmo 06-12-2006 02:00 PM

Go Bengals Go!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, had to say it.

pan6467 06-12-2006 03:30 PM

For those Steelers fans Bill Wills on WTAM had a morning interview with Big Ben today...... here's the link to his interview http://www.wtam.com/audio_archive/audio/Big%20Ben.mp3

His surgeons just had a news conference. All facial fractures were successfully fused, and there are no brain or spinal injuries or any other serious injuries that require surgery.

However, they also said that the family asked them to give out this info only and ABC still reports that his knees may have been wracked.

djtestudo 06-12-2006 08:07 PM

It's a shame that he got hurt, but I have no sympathy for him.

I don't believe in helmet laws either, but I believe in personal responsibility, and if he can't wear a helmet on his own, he deserves whatever happens to him.

I hope he loses some part of his career, not because of who he is or what team he plays for, but because apparently we still need more examples of athletes who have their careers destroyed by acting in an immature, irresponsible way.

feelgood 06-13-2006 12:14 AM

The first thing that came to my mind after reading the title was: BigBen rides a motorcycle?

soccerchamp76 06-13-2006 07:45 AM

Some athletes even haev a restriction in their contract against riding motorcycles (Jeff Kent anyone???).
The Steelers should be pissed at him, he is paid to be their quarterback and remain healthy. They invested in him and he goes around riding a motorcycle without a helmet.

This is where natural selection usually takes course.

If I was running a team, I'd have that in every contract - or at a minimum, that you have to wear a helmet on your bike or while skiing and for similar activities.

Toaster126 06-13-2006 08:49 AM

Frank Mir, the former heavyweight champion of the UFC, fucked himself over from a motorcycle crash. Ever since then, I've been hoping no more athletes I like get hurt.

Luckily none have yet. :D

Brewmaniac 06-13-2006 09:13 AM

Motorcycle accidents are the second leading cause of spinalcord injuries,he is one lucky sob. Wearing a helmet does make a difference! As was stated earlier, he doesn't play football without one. Dumbass! He should spend a day with me, he wouldn't ever ride again.

jorgelito 06-13-2006 03:23 PM

Does it nullify his contract then?

I think something similar happened to Aaron Boone (NY Yankees). He hurt himself playing pick-up basketball and that voided his contract or something. In any case, he was traded or something.

flstf 06-13-2006 06:49 PM

Motorcycle riders rarely come out unharmed from a high speed collision with a car whether they are wearing a helmet or not. I don't know how fast he was going when the car turned left in front of him but I doubt a helmet would have done him much good if he was speeding.

I guess world class athletes are by nature somewhat risk takers but you would think they would cool it at least in their prime earning years.

pan6467 06-13-2006 10:41 PM

Ah such is the curse of Cleveland......

Our biggest rival's star player rides a motorcycle, without a helmet doing anywhere between 30-60mph, takes a headrer into a Chrysler New Yorker, lands face first into the pavement and looks to start the season with minor injuries (except for that facial rebuild thing).

Our star, rides a motorcycle with a helmet on IN A PARKING LOT, doing less than 25mph, crashes into some soft bushes, injuries his knees is is not only out for last season but looks to be a question mark this season.

And to show the curse is real..... Ben had the morning interview with Bill Wills on Cleveland's WTAM..... then crashed.

Guess after the accident he would have sounded more like "frguiopf fiosfsmlfpe
jsplkleiisnepsmk".

I belong to an organization made up of about 98% bikers and mostly middle aged, some past 60(or maybe the wind in their faces for so long just make them look that way, but anyway...), their number one mantra is 'safety'. The best advice, 'ride like you're invisible to the cagers, because most times, you are.'
He was riding the fastest production motorcycle made and without a helmet?? When asked about that before this happened, he remarked he liked the state of PA's lack of helmet laws because it made him 'feel free when riding.' Bet that hospital bed is a real freeing experience...
BTW, his contract, regarding something like this, discourages 'reckless behavior', but does not have specific reference ie; wearing helmets.

Toaster126 06-14-2006 08:10 AM

It's becoming more and more commonplace to spell out the activities the athletes can't do on the contracts. I know from watching Sportcenter yesterday that the NBA had a spree of that when some dude wrecked himself. I'm sure it will spread to the other sports as these things continue.

And, as an aside, anyone who is on a motorcycle and doesn't use a helmet is a fucking moron. If these people can't be bothered to think of their own safety, they should think of all the people affected by an injury should they have one.

Woman who hit Big Ben getting threats
Quote:

PITTSBURGH - Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger did not have a valid motorcycle license when he crashed into a woman’s car last week, and the driver — who will be cited for failing to yield — has received threatening phone calls.

Roethlisberger will be issued $388 in fines and fees for riding without a license and not wearing a helmet, police Collision Investigator Dan Connolly said Monday. Only licensed motorcyclists are allowed to ride bareheaded in Pennsylvania, with certain restrictions.

The Super Bowl champion quarterback rammed his Suzuki Hayabusa into a woman’s Chrysler New Yorker on June 12 when she was making a left turn in front of him. Both had the green light.

Roethlisberger underwent seven hours of surgery to repair broken jaws and other facial bones. Tests showed no brain injuries, although he had a mild concussion; he also lost two teeth and chipped several others.

The woman, who will be cited for failing to yield to oncoming traffic, has received threatening phone calls since the accident, Police Chief Dominic Costa said. She filed a police report and the calls were being investigated.

Roethlisberger was traveling at the speed limit a posted 35 mph zone, but he braked and hit the car at a slower speed, he said, and there were no mechanical problems with either vehicle. Both will be sent summary citations.

To obtain a motorcycle license in Pennsylvania, riders must first get a learner’s permit, which requires a $10 fee, a vision screening and a written test. The permit is valid for one year, during which a road test must be passed to obtain a full motorcycle license.

Only after two years of possessing a valid license is riding without a helmet allowed; that restriction is waived if the rider takes an approved safety course.

Police did not have any contact with Steelers officials during the investigation, Connolly said.

“This was no different than any other crash,” Connolly said. “We found our determinations and determined that the parties needed to be cited and that’s what we’re doing.”

In an interview with ESPN radio Monday morning, coach Bill Cowher said there is no way of knowing what effect Roethlisberger’s injuries would have his playing ability.

“That’s the thing we have to be very sensitive to and we have to make sure that we monitor — and we’ll do that,” Cowher said. “We’ll work with the doctors. We’ll talk to him.”

He did not criticize Roethlisberger for not wearing a helmet, something he had done last year.

“I think it would be very unfair, and I think it’s really irrelevant, to be judgmental about the accident itself,” Cowher said.

“Sometimes with the lessons of life, you have to get knocked down before you get back up,” Cowher said. “He’s just very fortunate. This was one of those lessons that could have been devastating. It could have been a very tragic story.”

Roethlisberger was discharged Wednesday night from Mercy Hospital and apologized to the team, his fans and family in a statement. He also said that he would wear a helmet if he rode motorcycle again.

Police on Monday declined to reveal the name of the driver of the car, citing the threats.

Boy you Steelers fans are tough.. threats against the person who he had the accident with?

She could marry Steve Bartman and they could enter the Witless Protection Program.
