What is "second base?"
I'm just wondering, because I've heard this term many times as a euphemism for some minor act of sexual contact, but have never quite been sure as to what exactly it means. I've always assumed that it means letting your date touch your boobs, is this correct?
Also, if there is a "second base", does that mean that there is a "third base" and a "first base", a "home plate"? I've always assumed there must be, Paradise by the Dashboard Light makes no sense whatsoever. The only term I'm sure of is "struck out", which means, if I understand it correctly, "being turned down for a date". Would this mean that when someone is asking someone else out, that they are "at bat"? Or is it just those two baseball terms that apply, and the others are irrelevant. For someone who has at least a couple of baseball books* as favorites, I really don't understand this game much. Gilda *Shoeless Joe by W. P. Kinsella, and The Universal Baseball Association, Inc., J.Henry Waugh, Prop. by Robert Coover.

http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthread.php?t=75871 the general consensus on second base seems to be copping a feel... walking might have some interesting connotations too...

Thanks, mal. I did a search, but I didn't see any threads about this. I like your definitions best.
Might I add (and I got this from Coover's book): Pitcher: Top Catcher: Bottom Gilda

I always find it kinda funny how some people have never heard of the base system. It was a pretty common thing where I grew up.

Well there are euphemisms in every country and within every country within the different sub cultures ain't there? (I'm from the UK)
The influence of US culture in films to me meant 1st base - kiss 2nd base - breasts 3rd base - fingers in/over pussy 4th base - dick in pussy but no one used such terms at the school I went to. We were all pretty innocent in those days (70's, early 80's)

Seems a lot of people have different ideas of the base system though.
My understanding was the 1st was kissing, 2nd was copping a feel, 3rd was oral, and home was sex. Would anal be... 5th?

It might very well be an age thing... oral sex wasn't really on the menu much back when i was in high school... it seems to have cheapened over the years...

You know, I've heard these terms all my life, and for the life of me never fully understood just what they meant. Reading this thread, I am now under the impression that no one else really ever did either. We've all just been pretending all these years.

I'm glad somebody asked, because I was never quite sure. Does a hug count as getting up to the plate to bat? Or maybe a walk.

Gilda, I'm of the mind that there is no hard and fast rule as to what act goes with what base, with the exception of home plate of course. I think every group of youngsters has their own idea of the baseball code. As much as some people here have shared their opinion, I think that if you asked a whole bunch of different people, you'd get a whole bunch of different answers.
I can't believe I used the word "youngsters."

Ahh, the ole pa son pate.
I never really called them by the base system. If I fingered the girl, I would say that I fingered the girl. Kids always try to make things more innocent then they are.

BOR: Ack. That sentence should have been,
'Also, if there is a "second base", does that mean that there is a "third base" and a "first base", a "home plate"? I've always assumed there must be, OR Paradise by the Dashboard Light makes no sense whatsoever.' Thanks for the advice anyway . BTW, I have the CD. It was big thing among my group in college. It's one of those few CD's that aren't greatest hits that I can listen to straight through without skipping anything. You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth has the greatest spoken intro ever. Interesting factoid: The woman who sings the famale part on Paradise by the Dashboard Light, Ellen Foley, is the same woman who played the defense attorney on Night Court the first season, the blonde woman before Markie Post. You know, it occurs to me reading this that I've been married coming up on three years now, and intimate with my wife for more than a year before that, and we've never gotten past third base.
Which just goes to show, women are just no good at sports. Gilda

Btw, does anyone know where the phrase "copping a feel" came from??
Looking at it several times on this thread, I realize I've never heard "copping" used in any other context than in talking about "a feel." Can you "cop" anything else?

"Copping" definitely means stealing. I haven't found the exact origin yet. Dictionary.com mentions it might be a variant of the Latin for capture, which is capere. Clearly there is a similarity.
Other than my book learnin' research, I can tell you that jazz musicians used to "cop" someone else's licks. These days it's called "lifting" or "transcribing," but back in the 50s and 60s it was "copping."

<i>What is "second base?" </i>
I grew up with 1st being kissing, 2nd being foddling above clothes, 3rd foddling below clothes, HR being 'bumping uglies.'

The more I think about it, the more it seems that the whole baseball euphamism scheme had a little more behind it than keeping sex terms innocent. Seems to me it was a scoring scheme that a group of guys came up with to compete with each other in the realm of sexual "conquests". Oh, and I always understood the base system as:
1st: Anything above the collar. 2nd: Anything above the waist. 3rd: Anything but intercourse. Home: Sex.
