Tan Lines?

There's another thread on this already, but it's a poll instead of a discussion. Why do people like tanlines? When I see them on a girl, I'm disgusted. I think any form of tanline makes a girl completely unattractive. I've seen more guys than not on the TFP make comments that are similar to, "Tan lines make girls absurdly attractive." Why do you like tanlines? How does it turn you on? I honestly want to know. I find it odd that something that can make me find a girl ugly makes other guys crazy about a girl. I'm also not a fan of tanned girls period, so that might have something to do with it. It just baffles me that some guys found the girl in this thread hot because of her extreme tanlines: http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthread.php?t=92203 What do you find attractive about her skin being that different? It takes the beauty of a girl's skin away when I see tanlines.

I wasn't able to view the picture, but I thought I would just throw my opinion in here. I view tanlines as something rather appealing, and if I had to guess why, it would be that your seeing something that you know is usually covered up. It is kind of like peeking behind the clothes. I assume you are talking tanlines showing up on nude women, but I find even a peek at one on someone clothed is also appealing. In the case of her being nude, the contrast is what draws the eye towards those "forbidden zones" that are usually kept covered. I once read that the science behind lingerie is that it covers what we desire making us want it even more. Sometimes what is covered is more appealing than what is right in our faces.

bendsley 08-18-2005 07:54 AM

Haha, that link in your post is nasty. She's cute, but the extreme white on dark isn't appealing at all.

I would have to say I'm in complete agreement with Lasereth on this topic. Tanlines just do not appeal to me. I honestly prefer some redhead with milk white skin. Anyway, enough about that.

Redlemon 08-18-2005 08:02 AM

Perhaps your brain is picturing the negative health impacts when you see the tanlines? I know that, in my eyes, a woman drops a couple of grades of attractiveness if I see her smoking. Regarding tanlines: we use 45spf in my family, and my favorite kind of beach is one where I can be in the shade, naked. So, tanlines are twice-out for me.

Charlatan 08-18-2005 08:19 AM

My wife has a farmer's tan because she spends her weekends teaching equestrian riding... I know I wait all winter for the farmer's tan to come back.

There is just something about her white body framed by tanned arms and a tanned head that get me hot.

jader9920 08-18-2005 08:31 AM

I don't have a problem with tan lines necessarily as much as I do women who tan and then wear clothing which exposes the tan lines on her shoulders and such.

IMO if you are going to tan, wear something skimpy enough that your tan lines aren't visible when clothed.

Not sure why I just think it looks tacky, like black socks and sandals

Sage 08-18-2005 08:46 AM

I remember seeing a documentary on strippers at some point, and the one they were interviewing was saying that tan lines were important because when a guy sees something that's pale, he KNOWS he's seeing something "forbidden" and it's a huge turn-on. Personally, I think tan lines are icky. I wish there was someplace to sunbathe nude around here....

ngdawg 08-18-2005 08:47 AM

As a long time sunbather, I agree that tan lines showing when dressed look ridiculous. I also stopped lying in the sun because the effects on my skin are showing up-marks, freckles and crepey arms. That girl is gonna look like crap in 15-20 years, but you can't tell them that now.
We used to use those tan lines for comparisons, seeing how much darker we've gotten and trying to get even darker. Like everything else, with age comes wisdom....and fried old skin....

PhilMcGroin 08-18-2005 09:30 AM

I personally LOVE tan lines! It's like crossing a barrier between the common and the intimate

Bill O'Rights 08-18-2005 09:34 AM

I like tan lines. The lines on the girl that was offered up as an example are a bit, I will admit, on the extreme side, but I like 'em nonetheless. It kind of "highlights" the naughty areas, if you will.

sapiens 08-18-2005 09:39 AM

Personally, tan lines do nothing for me. Another reason men may find them attractive (in addition to highlighting "the forbidden") may be that they highlight areas men typically appreciate when looking at a woman's body: the curve of her waist, her breasts, her butt, etc.

joofoo 08-18-2005 09:46 AM

I'm personally not a fan of tan lines, this is mainly due to my wife tanning in the nude so my only frame of reference is what I see on her.

cellophanedeity 08-18-2005 09:57 AM

I hate my tan lines. I accidently burned, and now I look stupid naked.

I don't understand the appeal at all.

Rinndalir 08-18-2005 10:00 AM

I don't like them, there're a turn off for me. Infact I don't like any kind of tan, I like pale skin much much better

vautrain 08-18-2005 10:05 AM

I really don't have an opinion on tan lines, one way or the other. I've never even really heard of people being turned on by them, either. Excessive tanning, though, is kind of a turn off. With or without lines.

Haha, hilariously worded. Too bad about the burning though.

ruggerp11 08-18-2005 10:57 AM

if they are subtle they are hot, the ones in that post are not hot. too extreme. I like a girl who enjoys spending time in the sun and outside. Peeling a bikini off and seeing tan lines is hot to me. Not too much though.

shesus 08-18-2005 11:12 AM

Imo, that girl in the thread was photoshopped. The lines are too straight on her breasts and not as dark on her shoulders. But I digress on the topic...

I think that subtle tan lines can add depth, especially in the chest area. I don't like tanlines personally though. I try to avoid them when I can, but c'est la vie.

A few days after that burn you will be a peeling....

Umm...no...ya don't. :o

Pragma 08-18-2005 11:58 AM

I'm a fan of subtle tan lines - like if a girl is wearing a bikini top and running around in the sun and gets a gentle tan that you can have fun with when you strip her naked ;)

The tan lines shown in the thread linked to are far too extreme for me. I'm not exactly sure what people see in getting a tan that dark, and I hope she doesn't suffer too much in later life for tanning like that.

ChuckSnow5 08-18-2005 01:24 PM

Tan lines are sexy and I'd have to go with the "I'm seeing something forbidden" line.

When I see a girl's tan lines it makes me think I'm seeing something not every guy sees...

I bet you don't.

As an effect I don't mind one way or the other. Makes me hope for minimal consequences. As a goal it's a bit puzzling to me.

raeanna74 08-18-2005 01:54 PM

Accidental tan lines, like the previously mentioned farmer's tan, are the only tan lines that I can enjoy. The DARK skin of that girl in contrast to the white areas is so much of a contrast that it's distracting from her curves. In order to see the curves and face I had to PULL myself away from the distracting tan lines. Perhaps this is what some guys enjoy - being able to simply look at the places that she emphasised. In my experience I have dealt with the negative results of even accidental tans too much already. To see that kind of dark tan is depressing. Those girls are going to have dark ugly moles later on and perhaps even scars from having precancerous moles removed. Not a pretty site in my book. A waste in my eyes.

typhus 08-18-2005 02:00 PM

I like tanlines because I like pale skin. I don't like the tan around the tan lines. Tans just don't do it for me. Also, the tan lines are a good indicator of the "off limits" areas that you get to see that noone else usually does.

maleficent 08-18-2005 02:06 PM

My skin is as fair as the woman in the picture... there's no way I could ever get that tan from the sun, nor would a fake bake ever look natural... I can't help but wonder if the tan lines are helped along to make them more pronounced... because she's got dark hair and dark eyes, she doesn't look like she'd be that fair skinned...

Natural tans that dark, I dont find appealling, it just looks unhealthy, and in a few years when her skin feels like leather and she looks 10 years older than she is, she'll regret it.

Martian 08-18-2005 02:41 PM

Personally, I'm not going to leave the room if a girl takes her top off and has paler naughty bits, but I don't find any particular appeal to it either. That girl you referenced is also very not attractive (and clearly fake, if she was that pale naturally she'd be closer to lobster red than that dark brown) and looks like a naked zebra. Not attractive.

I'm with the 'nobody else sees this camp' as to my best guess at why some guys find them attractive. But also think that some guys go beserk for a girl with glasses, some are ambivalent and some can't stand it. Same for red hair, freckles, etc etc etc. Whatever floats your boat.

I think that is exactly it. I like them because it's something that most are not supposed to see. Plus, thoughout history, "pale" has always been considered attractive. The tanness of the rest of her body contrasts with the pale of the..um.."exciting" parts.

Oh, and those pictures were (poorly) photoshopped  .

777 08-18-2005 05:38 PM

Tan lines... To me, it tells me that she goes to the beach often, or swims out doors (instead of the gym). If I notice them on a gal I'm meeting for the first time, it's a topic of conversation :)

Otherwise, I'm indifferent to them.

In the ancient Greek cultures, as well as others I am sure, a tan was a sign that you were of lower class. Only the people who did physical outside labor had tans. Therefore, being pale was a status symbol. I'm not sure when the tide turned and being tan became the way to look sexy. I agree with others that posted. This lady is going to look like an alligator handbag in several years.

StanT 08-18-2005 07:06 PM

I'm an active outdoors kind of guy and have always dated active outdoorsy girls. Tan lines come with the territory.

One of my favorite passtimes is to guess the sports that a woman is into based on her tan lines.

Neck up tan = skier
hands darker than arms = rides a motorcycle and wears a jacket

Anxst 08-18-2005 07:11 PM

I've never liked tan lines, but I don't really count, because I don't like tans. I'm into the pale chicks myself. I never understood why women go and tan themselves.

I always had this odd feeling that somewhere in the back of their heads, a weird little voice is telling them "You know how toast is better than plain bread? That works for you too!"

It just plain doesn't. Stay pale!

Val_1 08-18-2005 07:31 PM

Well, the girl in the photos is SMOKIN'. and the tan lines don't detract from that IMO.

It happened during the Industrial Revolution. In a few years' time, most working class folks went from being farmers to being factory workers. All of a sudden the lower class was pale, so the rich decided to change their tack and get obscenely dark instead.

In regards to the tan lines; I don't think the woman in the post is particularly attractive, especially knowing that she'll have skin cancer right quick. Cancer isn't really my idea of a turn on. Some tan lines, however, can be nice. I'm addicted to thongs, but only curvy ones. Something about the shape just drives me nuts. When I see a nice thong tanline (similar to the shape in the pictures, maybe not so extreme), I can't help but like it.

Also, like some others have mentioned, when I look at some tan lines, it's like I'm seeing what I'm not supposed to. If there are distinct lines, it's because part of the body is normally covered up, and I get to see what most people don't.

And sometimes I pretend I have X-ray vision.

Gatorade Frost 08-18-2005 09:36 PM

I'd go either way personally. I think it's all good.

tec-9-7 08-18-2005 10:04 PM

I've heard from an anthropological standpoint, tanlines may be attractive because they serve to make the genitals more prominant appearing.

justjt 08-20-2005 11:49 PM

sometimes it's hot

Can take them or leave them. :hmm:

Sometimes it's sexy when the tan lines accent the parts the bikini covers.

Funnel 08-22-2005 07:24 PM

Tan lines don't get me very excited. Sometimes i think they look cute on girls, like me girlfriend has tan lines from going swimming in the summer but the ones where they are uber defined and white against black it just doesn't make me that happy.

hossified 08-23-2005 06:36 AM

they are a reminder that those 'parts' are normally covered up...and accentuate what is normally 'hidden' from the normal view.

Jinn 08-23-2005 07:08 AM

I have to agree with the posters above who stressed the "accidental" tanlines. I like tan and I like pale, but I generally don't like tan lines. "Farmer's Tan" and accidental tans are hot to me, because they're unique. Big white triangles on your boobs... yea.. not so much. My girlfriend got a bizarre tanline from wearing a v-necked shirt, and it was actually pretty cute.
