Wine as an aphrodisiac
Over some drinks the topic of wine and sex came up, and two female colleagues commented that specifically wine, (but not alcohol in general) really put them in the mood.
Do you suppose it is simply the romantic notions associated with wine over say beer or liquor that stirs them, or does it go deeper than that? |
Nope. It's definitely the alcohol and how much it affects them.

I think there could be some socialization going along with it. I've notice as soon as some people (especially college students) look at beer, they start acting like idiots. I think this is because beer can be a good excuse to act like an idiot, and why wait for it to actually start working when you can pretend and have just as much fun?
|
Speaking as a student, this is true.

yeah, it's the alcohol...but i think wine has a social cue to it that some of the other drinks don't.
this also, of course, depends on the kind of wine. Franzia probably isn't going to cut it... :) |
I think that there is a difference in the make up of wine and beer or other alcohol. For me sex is so much better when drinking wine over beer. I have greater sensation and better stamina. But as for an ex-so she thought it dried her out more.

I think wine is an aphrodisiac. Why do I think I'm right? Well I remember much of the honeymoon was spent indoors after our dinners.

Beer is the same thing, except it represents something a bit different. It does share the loss of inhabition, but it represents the "party" side of most people. This is the side that wears the lampshade on the head and spews profanities at parked police cars. Beer is a relatively inexpensive way to get drunk. |
For one, beer makes you fuller for the same amount of alcohol. A fuller belly is more likely going to leave you wanting to sit on the couch rather than get frisky and do some strenous, uh, exercise. I also imagine that many people prefer the taste of wine on their partner's breath as opposed to beer.
Those arguments work in favor of wine over beer. I imagine with hard alcohol the second-hand taste plays a small part again, but it is probably mostly the frame of mind an individual is going to be in when consuming the different beverages. Wine with a partner is much more romantically intoxicating than shots with a bunch of pals. |
for what it's worth, my girlfriend tells me that about 2-3 drinks of any sort of alcohol makes her plain horny.

Another issue with beer, is that in addition to having a different image, it also contains hops. Hops have a sedative effect, which can presumably exaggerate the effects of the alchohol itself. Combine that with the fact that the average person drinks beer in much larger quantities than wine (social thing, sip vs. guzzle) and the beer drinkers could end up too relaxed to act on the urge. :D

As people said earlier in the thread, wine does what it does because people expect it to do what they allow it to do to them. Yes, I purposefully worded that sentence in that manner. |

I have to agree, it's the social image of wine being more sexy than beer or hard liquor. |
