Long hair on guys?
Hello, all. I am a high school senior, and I've always been really interested in growing my hair out long...probably to about shoulderblade length. I haven't been able to do it yet because my school doesn't allow long hair, but I'll be graduating in five months, so I can start growing now! But I'm really not sure if I want to go through with it.
My question, mainly to the ladies, is this: what is your general opinion of long hair on guys? Do you think it looks nice, or do you think it's ugly? Is there any special style on guys that you prefer (i.e. ponytail, braided, loose, etc.)? Do you recommend highlights or anything of the sort? Also, from the women, what would you recommend as the best way to keep that hair healthy? I've heard that a mild shampoo combined with a good conditioner tends to do the trick. Thanks a lot! |

I'm not a lady, so I woun't vote. But when I was younger I had hair down to the middle of my back. It definitely worked on the ladies. It just depends on the type of woman you want to attract. If you learn to play a bit of guitar it'll help sell the look. Ponytails are not really cool anymore, but as long as you don't wear one with a sport coat, jeans, and a thin gold hoop in your left ear you should be fine.

*sigh* I know, it really stinks. It's a private, all-boys high school, and they're rather snooty about their dress code stuff. I have no idea why they've made that rule...I personally can't stand it. But it's a small price to pay, I think, for there aren't any comparable schools in my area in terms of academics...in my city, the public schools stink (as opposed to places like NYC and New England, where public schools are just fine).

I got the type of hair that simply fro's if it grows out to long. I have to keep it military style. *shrugs* I guess it's low maintenance, I don’t ever have to comb/brush or anything it in the mornings ;-)
It would be cool to be able to grow it down to my shoulders, if I had they kind of hair that would do it. |

Well, I voted yes, because I have long hair and I've had no complaints about it from the ladies.

I voted yes because I used to have short hair, and being lazy I let it grow out a little bit, and peopel said it looked better. So I kept letting it grow and kept getting more compliments. Now its like 15 inches long and I love it. The best part is that the ladies like playing with it when its well-brushed and silky

I had hair down to the middle of my back for about 10 years until last year. I mainly grew it that long because it felt cool to ride my Harley with it flappin in the wind. I finally decided to make a big change and walked into a barber shop in Deadwood S.D. during bike week and got a buzz cut. Shorter hair is much easier to take care of. The long hair is always getting into your eyes and I had to wear a bandana or head band almost all the time.
I used to use horse shampoo, the stuff they use to wash their manes. It is good for getting out all the tangles when you ride. I can't remember the name but you can get it at many animal supply stores. I got the idea from some girls who used it and recommended it. |

I love guys who have longer hair. It doesn't even have to be that long...chin-length is good...longer is better, though. Just keep it from being too greasy and use the appropriate conditioner for your hair type. My guy friend has really fine curly hair that he keeps silky smooth with Aussie Moist. That combined with a light leave-in conditioner (think Paul Mitchell's the Conditioner or Infusium 23) should be enough for most hair types for daily use; the trick is to wash only your scalp and let the shampoo rinse through the rest of your hair on most days. Really wash it and deep condition it once weekly.

I've always wondered what I would look like with long hair...but it's a little too much work if you ask me. Conditioner? Horse shampoo? Yeah sounds like a bit of a chore. I got the spikey hair/messy look and girls like that too. I get hair pets a lot too...gotta say it's fun...cept guys feel compelled to wave their hands across the top too

i had long hair. still do actually. if you grow it out make sure you get it cut every now and then, just to keep it even and what not. I didn't have it cut for two years, just kept letting it grow and grow, and while it didn't look bad, it could have looked better had i done more maintenance on it aside from shampoo/conditioner.

I'm nearing 50, and have nearly always had longish hair. Lately, my hair is longer than it ever was, and my wife wouldn't have it any other way.
When I switched to the teaching profession, I started tying my hair in a ponytail to keep it out of my eyes as I bent over to deal with one of the little tykes. The ponytail keeps the hair neat and tightly pulled in place, so most of the time my hair is actually neater and less trouble than it ever was when it was only medium-long. I wash it once every three days or so, give it a quick spritz of hairspray in the morning after it's brushed back and tied back. That's it. At night when I'm just hanging out at home, I let it hang loose; it now goes down to my shoulderblades. My wife thinks it's sexy as hell. What I'm saying is, women find long hair sexy _if it's well managed._ If you have a nature wave in your hair, women with straight hair will sometimes come up and make envious comments; it happens to me. I always liked mine when it was long, but lately I'll get a whim to shave it bald. Some ladies seem to like that too. But please avoid the mullet at all costs.

It depends on the man. Some men look very sexy with long hair and some men look very scuzzy. I prefer not shoulder length but longer than buzz cut. Something like Brendan Fraser in The Mummy. If you have nice hair and already are a bit sexy then you will look really good. If you are ugly and have bad hair, you'll just look worse. Use a shampoo and conditioner (avoid the 2 in 1 bottles) and everything will be alright.

I had long hair throughout my last year of high school and my first year of university, and I'd never do it again. It was shoulder length by the time i got it cut (to about an inch and spiky). I seem to be the only guy who doesn't like long hair, and the type of women it attracted.
I didn't like the maintenance and how it always got in the way and I especially didn't like how it made me look like a stoner, even when clean and cut nicely and I was dressed formally. I just have that type of face, I suppose, and combined with long hair I looked like a junkie. When I say I didn't like the women it attracted, that's not strictly true, but I must say that a lot of women were attracted to the hair. They assumed I was some guitar-playing indie kid (which I wasn't) but also that many would go crazy when I mentioned getting it cut. I got sick of it early on but kept it partly because so many people liked it like that and said it looked good. Not so much bowing to peer pressure, just hearing that people liked that look and me thinking that's fair enough. Anyway, when I eventually got it cut a lot of people missed it, they missed the indie-rock shit that was never there in the first place. This was all during my first year at university so there's some room for stupidity and peer pressure and a focus on image. |

i had long hair for three years before i cut it into a mullet for one day for our mullet themed pep rally the last week of senior year, i was the main attraction thank you very much. i am now in the process of growing it out. one of themajor things is to still get it cut slightly while you growing it, it makes it look much better and more ballanced and you can get to the length you want much quicker. i personally like my hair just passed the bottom of my ear lobes. i like that since thats where my wave in my hair is well defined.

i used to have semi long hair (was about shoulder length)
but when my hair gets longer it starts to curl. It seemed pretty mixed with the girls. about half of them said leave it long it looks cool, and the rest said cut it short. My boss this summer saw some of my older pictures on my camera and said she likes long hair on guys but i dont look good with long hair so its a tough call. Also i never had it in a pony tail do to the curl it would always end up over my shoulder and i would be, um uncomfortable with it. i was also told i look like jesus and all the women in my family were jealous of the curls ;p |

When I was younger I never liked the look of guys with long hair. I figured that I just couldn't be attracted to it. But when I met Elwood, he had longer hair than I did, and it was cute and curly. He always used to wear it down, and I thought he'd look kinda dorkish with it tied back, but one day he showd up at my house with it loosely tied back and it was HOTT!! It was kinda funny because for a while my hair got shorter and his got longer. He cut it a couple months ago, and since he has curly hair I think it looks so cute short. But I like it either way. Incidentally I think he's growing it long again.

I won't vote but I had long hair for quite some time and I think it attracted many women.
I let my hair grow down just a little past my waist and a lot of girls thought that was really sexy. I have strong, thick, straight, china doll hair and, if I wore a skirt, people would mistake me for a woman (hey, I was in university). I washed it twice a week with any old shampoo (probably Head and Shoulders) and used a leave-in conditioner just after washing. It took quite a while for my hair to look or smell oily and washing and drying that much hair was a bit of a chore, hence the frequency with which I did. I can't help but think that there are women out there who won't like long hair on a guy, regardless of how nice the hair is. I can attest that there are girls who feel the opposite so I guess it's just a matter of what you think... |

Hubby had long hair when I met him, and I loved it. He has short hair now, and I still love it The trick is to make sure it is well groomed; stringy, greasy hair is NOT attractive on men or women! As for shampoos, I've tried all kinds, and stuff you can get at the supermarket works just as well as high priced brands; I like L'oreal Vive shampoos or Pantene.

Being a hippie, I'm all for long hair (sadly, mine has only a year's growth at current, but it's a big change from the caesar-cut I sported for 5 or 6 years). Definitely takes more time caring for it, and all the static electricity in the air is killing me (winters are really dry here), but I'm damn determined to see it past my shoulders. Good luck with your hair experiment, and beware of anyone reccomending a pony tail... you probably wouldn't want to turn into pony-tail yuppie scum. Ugh, I hate those guys.
As far as it being popular with the ladies, I get alot more compliments about my hair now that I ever did before. |

I used to have shoulder length golden blonde hair, and it did have a somewhat large attraction potential with the ladies, but the stuff was so damned thick (it's currently 2" long and bolt upright without any kind of gel, and it just refuses to do anything else) that i eventually got it cut off to make my life easier.
Silly mistake really, I think i might grow it out again, i do miss women playing with it (excusing the pun). |

I'm a guy with long hair. I first grew it out in high school as I hit my rage against the machine/down with the man phase. I was one of the geeky uncool nerdy guys at my school so growing it out just made me a geek with long hair. But the next year I tranferred to a new school and within a month I had my first girlfriend ever. The hair was what made her notice me but then again I also had an attitude change from wallflower to more outgoing and confident, it was a big "starting over" time for me.
Long hair doesn't automatically make you a chick magnet but if you can pull it off it can help. Every girlfriend I've ever had including my wife was first attracted by the hair, and girls who are put off by it probably aren't my type anyway. Even with the ring on I've had chicks I've known for like 5 minutes, meeting at a party or whatever, ask to play with my hair. Its great. And if I cut it off my wife would kill me, not that I would, there's nothing quite like just sitting and having a woman play with your hair. What's funny is people automatically assume I'm a hippy - and I'm a salary 8-5 M-F suburbanite, I usually vote Republican and I've only smoked pot once in my entire life. |

The bible says the "hair is the glory of the woman." Yeh, I know. Very few of your TF'ers care a whit about what the bible says. But I view that passage as an indication that it is just natural for the ladies to wear hair significantly longer than the men.
I think that's why long hair on men is considered a gay look by many people. It is effeminate. And that's why really short hair or bald looks are considered "butch" or dyke-ish on women. It's in our genes. Been codified in the bible. Millenia of history behind it, too.

The Vikings had long hair. Speaking of the Bible, what about Samson? Pippin the Short deposed the last Merovingian king by cutting his hair and throwing him in a monastery. The Merovingians wore their hair long as a sign of their kingship. The Pippinids wore their hair short to show that they were not Merovingians. The length of men's hair depends on the society. The style in the 1700s was for men's hair to be just past shoulder length and held back in a ponytail. It's really got nothing to do with the Bible or any sort of tradition - it's more fashon than anything. At the moment it is the fashon for men's hair to be short. Wait a few years.
Does anyone know if women have always had longish hair or if there are cultures where the woman keep their hair short?

Well I consider it a fair trade because I refuse to let my wife get her hair cut...it just looks soooo good long, she can pull off short hair but long looks so much better. Actually I feel that way about most women. There are a few that do look better with it cut short but to me most women look sexier with long hair. I look at it like this, if a guy has long hair then great for him, but on a woman beautiful long hair is like a work of art. And you wouldn't just walk into the Louvre and paint over Mona Lisa so why would a girl hack off her hair if it looks so good on her long??? Sexist attitude, probably, do I care, hell no |
