sex and gyno exam
 

My girlfriend is going for her first gyno exam next week, and we're wondering if it's ok to have sex the night or two before the exam day. I would think that it would be fine but I really have no idea otherwise. Will it affect the results of whatever tests/exams the doctor performs?

just out of curiosity, how old are you and your gf? how old does one typically get her first gyno exam?

Don't have sex for at least a day before the exam. That's my understanding as far as time goes. The doctor will do a physical examination to check her health and for anything that might indicate a problem. There will also be a test called a pap smear during which a cell sample will be taken from her cervix. This is routine, but you don't want anything that could possibly skew the results (that includes anything that might be left behind after sex).

Your best bet is to have her call her doctor and ask. She shouldn't be shy about asking, and the receptionist will be more than happy to answer that and any other question either of you might have.




A woman is supposed to visit the gyno for the first time either when she becomes sexually active, is thinking about becoming sexually active, or around the age of 18. Whichever comes first.

The doctor when she made the appointment also probably told her not to douche either - that can hide problems...

Both she and I are 21. Yeah, it's a bit late for her first exam but oh well.

Thanks for the help everyone. We'll err on the safe side and just not have sex the day or two before the exam. But when they say not to engage in 'sexual activity', do you think other things are ok, like masturbation/oral sex?

Have her pick up the phone and ask the doctor...

Oral sex I would probably say no, but - I don't have an MD.

They always tell my wife, no sex the night before. I assume they're similar if not all the same.

If in doubt, call and ask.

Go three days. If it's her first exam, make sure everything has time to go back to its natural state when she goes.
