Most reliable condom?
What's the most reliable condom on the market? My girlfriend doesn't want to be put on birth control because she is cautious about some of the side effects (weight gain, etc). I'm wondering what condom has the best record in your experiences. I'm the paranoid type that would still feel worried after having sex with birth control AND a condom, so any input is appreciated.
Thanks. |

'You should never, ever, ever rely on only that,' says my boyfriend.
I, on the other hand, sympathise for you and your girlfriend. However, if she is willing to have sex, she needs to be willing to take birth control. I have done the shot these last three months, and it hasn't made me gain weight. Anyway, you (as the boyfriend) should encourage that, and also encourage her (for example, you should let her know that she's beautiful for what's inside). Weight gain should not be her only motive...really, unless she has some underlying problems. |

If you're really worried about breakage then stay away from the "extra thin" ones for peace of mind, but I don't think it really matters. The most commonly used condom brand (trojan) has the most failures, but the rate is about the same for each brand.

If the pill she tries she gains weight on, then try a different one. No doctor would want you to look/be unhealthy for the sake of birth control.
Tell her that there are HUNDREDS of different kinds of pills, and many other alternative solutions. Unless you want a good chance of having a child or pregnancy scare soon, please, just go talk to a doctor or something. I've been on Depo for almost 2 years and haven't gained any weight - if anything, I've lost some. No other bad side effects. |

Personally, although it's somewhat of a tighter fight girth-wise, I'd recommend the Trojans w/ Spermicidal Lubricant. Another option, although I would check to make sure that it wouldn't corrode the condom, is to purchase a spermicidal foam to use with a condom....
