Once upon a time...

Reading a BDSM picture.
Ok, you see a woman in a leather corset, thigh high boots. Is she Dom or Sub?
You see a post on the Way Side mentioning boots in the title, do you assume you will see males or females? What clothes does a Master wear? What about a mistess? Is a collar all it takes to show a sub? I'm thinking of the iconography of gender and role in bdsm pictures. I'm pretty sure that there is more to it than simple apparel, I mean that some models can show themselves very dominant in one picture, and breathtakingly helpless in another. Betty Page is a particularly fine example of this. What do you think? Is it just a matter of getting a person and putting them in an outfit and posture for a stereotype? Could you photograph a Dom(me) on their knees and make them look authoritative?

As far as most BDSM is concerned, dress is dress, and neither necessarily mean anything.
There are, however, many commonalities. At a party or gathering, for example, a collar is usually indicative of an owned submissive- that is, a submissive that is controlled by a Dom(me). Some use Dom(me) because it can be male, Dom, or female, Domme. This is not always the case, as some just like wearing the collars for other reasons. Most of the time, a Domme will wear more elaborate or nicer clothing- a corset, leather/PVC, fishnets or stockings, etc., whereas a female submissive sometimes wears some basic leather or PVC, but mostly little or no clothing- but chains, rope, collar, etc. Doms often wear leather or more elaborate clothing, and sometimes just regular pants and shirt. I hope others have input on this, as tha more you know, the better! |
