Just a minor correction, but the federal government can't prohibit prostitution within state borders. So it is prohibited by individual states. And by far, it is illegal in all but one: Nevada, which legalized it in 1971. Remember that next time you walk along Las Vegas Boulevard. :)

Is prostitution regulated by the government in Canada? It seems like something that should be, due to the disease factor (which is probably why I would never get an illegal prostitute in the US).

There is no law regulating sex for money in Canada per se.

There are laws prohibiting the following:

Communication for procurment (i.e. you can't pick up a prostitute in public and communicate that you want to buy her services)

Maintaining a common bawdy house (i.e. you can't have a place that is regularly used for purposes of the sex trade)

Living off the avails (i.e. no pimping)

The loophole allows outcalls. This means a woman can meet you at your home or in a hotel and charge you for sex. If she has you over to her house it can be construed as "common bawdy house".

When she advertises her services, you are paying for her time with you as an escort. You are not officially paying for sex.



The end result is that most escorts are left alone unless they are underage, illegal immigrants, being exploited by a pimp or selling it on the street and pissing off the neighbourhood.
