Something I read this morning got me wondering just how a vagina is made/constructed for a transexual. It made for some interesting reading, so I thought I might post it here in case anyone else has ever wondered. I'm also currently looking for more details on the penile construction for women, but it's a bit more elusive, probably due to the lower number of occurance I would think. Here's what I found:

Contrary to popular myth, this two-and-a-half-hour surgery does not involve the penis being cut off. It is instead emptied of its spongy tissue and, like the finger of a rubber glove, turned inside out. The skin of the penis is gently pushed into a cavity formed by separating the lower abdominal muscle fibres, and this inside-out formation becomes the vaginal lining. The scrotum is used to create the frontal lips of the vagina; some of the skin at the base of the inverted penis can be surgically sculpted to look like a clitoris. Enough of the urethra is preserved from the penis to tunnel it under the tissue and place it in the female position. (There was a reasonable discussion during the Beer Social here regarding the logistics of such an operation---in particular the issue of providing lubrication was thought important.)

A couple more interesting notes:

A cavity is made between the anus and the bladder, and this is where the inverted penis goes in.

The corpora cavernosum (the tubes which fill with blood) are moved inside, ringing the inverted penis.

A second proceedure is sometimes performed, attaching a piece of intestine to the end of the canal to increase depth.

there was a fairly famous tranny who spoke at our school about her experience, and explained this stuff... It's kind of interesting, but I'd never go through with such a thing... I like being a guy too much and I'd freak out if I looked down and didn't have a friend who always wanted to shake my hand.

I recently read about how the genitals form in-utero, that's even more interesting (like how that seam down the middle of the scrotum was our vagina lips that closed as we formed into boys). we all start off as girls, seems like a few of us just want to go back ;)

This has always been a curious subject for me.. If you have any explanations of the procedure that are more involved and include pictures, I'd be interested to see how it's done.
