LONDON (Reuters) - Size is usually more of an issue but the shape of the penis is also important because it evolved to dispel other men's semen, according to scientists in the United States.

Gordon Gallup and researchers at the State University of New York in Albany showed in experiments using latex replicas, an artificial vagina and a cornstarch mixture that the ridge of the penis acted as a semen displacement device.

"They found that the coronal ridge... could scoop out more than 90 percent of the cornstarch mixture (from the artificial vagina) with just one thrust, while a phallus with no coronal ridge only managed to remove 35 percent," New Scientist magazine said on Wednesday.

Gallup and his team, who reported their finding in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior, said the depth of penetration was also important in expelling more semen.

Their findings were supported with surveys of students who were questioned about their sexual experiences.

"Sexual intercourse often involved deeper more vigorous penile thrusting following periods of separation or in response to allegations of female infidelity," they said.

So this is all about early man's taste for sloppy seconds. I wonder if a few million years of monogamous (ever notice how similar that word is to 'monotonous'?) male/female relationships will lead to the evolution of a sleeker, headless love tool.

This reminds me of a joke.

Harvard University spent 300,000 dollars on a study and recruited dozens of volunteers, and determined that the head of the penis is larger than the shaft in order to give the man more pleasure and orgasm faster.

Yale, after seeing this study, recruited hundreds of volunteers and spent almost twice as much to determine that the penis' shape was intended to give the woman more pleasure.

The penis head is also designed to break a sort of filmy layer that forms after a woman has already had sex with another man. In many animals like mice, and to a lesser degree in humans, a sort of film barrier forms after semen is deposited to block more semen from entering. The reason that penis' are more pointed is so that they can break the film more easily. That is likely why penis' aren't cylinders with a flat end and a hole.

If anyone has met one of the females from SUNY Albany, you'd realize that there was no real need for an artificial vagina in this experiment. But in all seriousness, I live like 20 minutes from that campus, this guy could live down the street from me and he researches other men's penises. Thats kinda freaky.

I saw this on the Discovery Channel one time. Those "Human Sexuality" shows are very interesting, lots of stuff like this on there.

Man im surprised they really had to do a study it should pretty obvious, You stick something with near straight edges on a shaft and stick into a small hole you'll pull out a lot more dirt then you would with just a shaft
