my suggestion? tae bo. that, or just go out to the clubs, watch some of the people bust their moves, and practise them later, at home. it'll take time, but you'll get it.

I go through phases where sometimes I can't bring myself on the floor, other times I jump right in. I think primarily it's an issue of not being self-concious.

Unless you're being an ass and dancing around with a cup of beer and bumping into people, no one is going to point and laugh. In fact, depending on the atmosphere, people standing around looking scared to dance and tapping their feet are way more conspicuous.

jukaman,

If it's dance clubs you go to (still charmingly called "rave clubs" in America... hahaha ), then dancing shouldn't be too much of a problem.

It sounds trite, but if you like the music, you can honestly close your eyes and get into the rhythm. There's not much "dancing around" to club music. Mostly small hip movements to the beat and maybe some hand waving...

As phredgreen says, go to the clubs, watch people etc.

A few drinks (or other stimulants) can also help a lot...

If it's a Country & Western club and she likes Line Dancing... well that's another kettle of fish entirely.

You're on your own there kiddo!

as long as your not doing any technical dancing with predefined movements, like the tango (first one that comes to mind), there isn't really a "good way" to dance.

pretty much agree with Mr Mephisto here, just close your eyes and get into the rhythm. Also don't worry about what others think, as long as your enjoying yourself. Alcohol is good at getting rid of any inhibitions you may have.

Seriously though, I agree with everyone else. No real "good way" to dance to club music.

I never have figured it out. Now I just pawn my wife off on some other hot chick and enjoy the show. After a while of that anybody looks good with two gorgeous women grinding him--no matter what the hell he's doing.

(btw, every chick that's ever said anything to me about my skills has been along the lines of: With her moves, don't worry, no one's looking at you!)

Consider yourself lucky that its only dancing in clubs.... my girlfriend is from Latin America and she is an incredible dancer, I am under constant pressure to learn to Samba, Merengue, Salsa. I have tried explaining to her that as a European I lack joints anywhere below my waist, but she is determined to get me moving those hips

Watch yourself in the mirror. I know it sounds funny but then you can tell what you look like and you can copy others moves.

Haha. I knew I wasn't the only one in the same boat

My GF is an amazing dancer but I can do diddly squat. I try to dance with her (moving the arms and stuff in front of her. Hah). I can twirl and spin her in a real dancing environment (say a formal or something like that), but I'm completely lost in clubs.

One of these times, I'm going to get her to show me some cool moves.

Oh yeah, advice:

Will she show you some cool moves? Maybe you two could practice some slick moves then execute them in a club. If they make people jealous or get people watching, then you have done your job. If you accidentally mess up but she gets a good laugh out of it, then you win too.

After working as a bouncer in a club for 4 years, I have found some important things out.

First, most people are more worried about themselves than they are about how you dance.

The only terrible dancers are the 50 olds trying to look cool out there by themselves and doing the leg in one place dance.

Second, If you are with a girl that you are trying to hook up with, get close, follow her, and make her know that the only person in the room you know is there is her.

A little alcohol would also help you get past the inhibitions.

lots of places offer dance classes if for cheap if you're looking to dance in any formal way. I've found a good way to improve my dancing skills is this process: observe people dancing in clubs. Watch the ones who you think are dancing well. If you're shy, go home to do the rest of this. Picture yourself in your mind's eye dancing like the person you saw before. Visualization really helps. Then, try to match what you visualized with you body.

It worked well for me. Course, your mileage may vary.

Dude man come on guys its really not that hard. I have a latin girlfriend and man she can break it down. I love nothing more then just to watch her dance. Damn, but anyways have her teach you at home learn dance around the house get comfortable with the movements. Its really easy and fun and its exercise 3 great things in one and it almost always leads to sex at least in my case so I guess that makes 4. If I take my girl to a club and dance with her the rewards are great indeed. besides no one care about you anyways they are looking at your girl girls don't watch guys, guys watch girls. You don't have to be a backup dancer, and more then likely your not going to be.

I agree here women really care more about the confidence to do something not how good it is or really anything else. If you look like your having fun and they're gonna come running to have fun with you.

I don't think its something that can really be learned...you either have rhythm or you don't. Dance routines can be taught and learned, but just dancing in general is more of a feel thing.
You can watch people dance all you want, but if you don't have that beat going through you, you are gonna end up looking very uptight even when copying someone elses moves.

Then again Ren McCormack and Willard could prove me wrong in Footloose. Damn that boy can dance!! (Can ya smell that? no not that smell, that is your upper lip, I'm talking about the sarcasm?)

I feel there is no right or wrong way to dance. Just feel the music and move. Some may have more rythum than others, but that doesn't mean they are any better than you. Just relax, have a drink and most of all have fun.

Just kinda squirm and jump.

You'll prolly look better than most people out there.

Or, you could always train at the local Dance Dance Revolution machine.

this is my suggestion to alot of people, get a couple drinks in you and just dance like nobodys watching, the first couple times you may look like an ass, but dont worry about it, nobody cares... but after that you'll begin to develop your own style of dancing and gain confidence on your own.

Dancing is a personal expression. Painting is a personal expression. Some do, some don't. I don't paint. I have danced. I am musically inclined and rhythm is not a problem. I side with the, "Do what feels good." faction. I agree that the, "Have a few drinks." faction has a valid point. Remember, nobody dances like you better then you. Chicks like rhythm and motion. The two feel good whether it's dancing, or swinging a club, or tossing a disc, or banging a tight... well you get the idea. Go! Do! Or do not! There is no try!

something more concrete?

1. Go to a gay bar
2. Watch the gay men dance with style
3. copy moves

or

Befriend good male dancer (straight or gay, doesn't matter, go with what would be most comfortable for you) and get him to teach you how to dance.

i had the same problem when i went to my first club this weekend! but it was a techno drum'n'bass club (or at least, the music was for that night) and there's a certain type of techno dance that they do that i didn't know how to do... everyone was all dancing that way and i felt like i'd look stupid if i just went out and tried to do my thing. it's not that i can't dance, but i don't know how to dance like that.. they also do that weird hand thing but that's more associated with rave music than this type of techno, so i didn't see any of that. through just observing, i think i could figure it out, but not without the comfort of my own room first :P

I'd say invite your GF over, close the blinds, put on some music, lower the lights, and say you want to learn to dance with her.

Also, I'm not much of a drinker, but I'd still reccomend a little alcohol. Think of it as using the right tool for the job. Sure you could frame a house with a pair of linesman pliers, but it'd be alot easier to use a hammer.

My GF and I are the two "whitest" people on earth, still we've done the above a couple of times. It can be very sexualy exciting - and you never know what it might lead to
