Help with assignment on fetish
Hi I'm a photograph student. I'm writing an essay on photograph and the fetish - fetish in the sence that Christine Metz and Freud understand it. Not common place fetish.
It's more about the nature of a photograph being still and glossy and it's abilty to have realistic close ups etc and obsession and objectification and Frued's idea's about how the little boy first see's his mother has no penis and turns her underwear into a fetish. I don't know if anyone will understand or know about any of this. But I need some credible images - not porn. I need well known art photographs who may use fetish elements in there work. I'm having trouble because none of the literature gives names, it just talks about concpets. Robert Mapplethorpe is the only name I have. The essay is due on monday :P (it's saturday night here) any thoughts/ names/ images would be of great help. (I don't know if this is where this thread should go. mods, feel free to move it if need be) |

Not an afficionado of the fetish, I think of these as art sites. Then again, the female form is the most beautiful form of art in existence. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it

Also, pay attention to the spelling of names, concepts etc. It can cost you to ignore these details.

all pornography is the fetishism of sex, the preference of simulation over reality, the commodification of basic human and in fact genetic desires.
In my opinion you can only really understand the pyschological view of fetishism you talk about in the terms of reference of commodification... its nothing to with kids wanting to shag their mum and kill their dad, its to do with the relentless and ever spiralling thrall of capital and capitalistic conditions. In fact, I would go so far to say that masturbation is a capitalist invention. Of course, such things mechanically existed in previous societies and even in lower animals, but only under the conditions of capitalism if a multi billion pound masturbation industry created. I expect you shouldnt have to look too hard to find some so called artist taking a black and white picture of a shoe or a hemline in close up or a set of buttocks... but I do not think such things have any meaning outside of a true understanding of the conditions which create them. ___ "Philosophy is to real life as masturbation is to sex" - Karl Marx

But seriously, other primates which do not have capitalist systems also masturbate, which demonstrates conclusively that there's no connection between capitalism and masturbation.
Yellowbird, read Sigmund Freud's Three Essays on Sexuality. It will give you all the insight into the subject you need. |
