Sized-to-fit condoms w/ standard of measurement
Sized-to-Fit Condoms Obviously Require You to Accurately Measure Your Naughty Bits - TheyFit - Gizmodo
The article is interesting because it outlines some interesting things. The FDA does not allow companies to sell very large or very small condoms. WHY?!?!? I personally hate condoms because I have never been able to find one that fits me right. My most recent adventures with large condoms had them cutting off my circulation. Under those circumstances, I'd rather just jerk off. Now I know why I have these troubles - the FDA doesn't even allow them to come in my size.

Yeah, this is mentioned in the comments section. It could be that the "violation" is too minor for the FDA to enforce.

I've inspected the factory where these are made.
The reason that the FDA "will not allow" the extreme sizes to be sold is not because the have taken a unilateral hatred of small or big men, but rather that the US CFR which dictates the rules for condoms is based on the International Standard ISO 4074. ISO 4074 includes tests for strength and extension of the latex film, to ensure that condoms are strong enough to safely do their job in most cases of correct use. If you make a condom very small, it has not got enough "stretch" in it to be inflated to the minimum volume required by the standard. If you make a condom very large, it has not got a thick enough film to support the pressure required by the standard. Condoms are measured in terms of their flat width, and their length when unrolled. My company's largest size has a flat width of 60mm, and a length of >200mm. Given that you can expand it to contain over 20litres (bigger than your torso) of air, it should be large enough to accommodate the vast majority of men (like about 98%). The problem in making extreme minority condoms is that the glass formers that are dipped into the raw latex cost tens of thousands of dollars a set, so if you want to create a condom that can only be sold to 2% of men, and only 1/3 of men use condoms, you're restricting yourself to a very niche product with a high tooling charge. This being the case, the cost per condom ends up being too high for anyone to launch a cost effective product. The imports that you have seen are probably not ISO 4074 compliant, but come from a country that uses the (much lower) WHO condom standard - which was designed to allow barely acceptable condoms to be made and sold to poor countries with some degree of control, but not as good as the standard required in richer countries.

Tight condoms are also very uncomfortable for the woman. It can pinch their vaginal wall.
What I'd like to see one day is every condom manufacturer properly post the size of their condoms on their respective Web sites, with the width measurements taken at three points, namely the head, the shaft, and the base. Right now, it's very difficult to determine which condom will work best for me except through trial and error. It was only through dumb luck that I found the perfect size and taper many years ago, but I still had to go through four different brands/sizes before hitting paydirt. |
