Now it's science, not just a saying: Blondes have more fun.

To dye for: Blondes really do have more fun as study reveals women with lighter hair have more confidence | Mail Online

It has long been reckoned that blondes have more fun - but now they are thought to be more confident and amorous too.

Scientists claim their research shows that bleaching hair does wonders for a woman's self-image.

They feel more attractive, more likely to ask someone out on a date and become more adventurous in the bedroom.

Fun-loving blondes: Actress Scarlett Johansson and Girls Aloud's Sarah Harding have lighter hair which is said to boost confidence

This increased confidence does not just affect a woman's love life. They find it easier to summon the courage to approach their boss and ask for a pay rise after colouring their hair blonde.

Bottle blondes are also more likely to complain at unfair treatment and more inclined to put their foot down with friends and relatives, according to the study into the effects of hair dyeing on mood.

The research could help explain the success and allure of stars from Marilyn Monroe and Lana Turner to Jessica Simpson and Kim Cattrall.

While lighter locks lifted mood the most, other changes of hair colour also gave women a boost.

Mark Sergeant, who carried out the research at Nottingham Trent University, asked more than 200 women how they felt before and after dyeing their hair.
The original platinum blonde: Actress Marilyn Monroe began life as brunette. The research found those who dye their hair are more likely to sing and dance in front of an audience

Dr Sergeant, who admits to dyeing his brown hair a range of colours including, in his youth, blue, said: 'Colouring your hair may seem like an art to most people, but there is actually a lot of science behind it. The changes we noted in the study in participants' behaviour and psychology were significant.

'Not only were their confidence and mood levels elevated but also their inhibitions seemed to be mitigated with many reporting feeling more attractive and sexually exciting.

'Across the board participants viewed colouring their hair as something that raised their confidence.

'They were prepared to ask for things they wouldn't normally be confident enough to ask for, such as pay rises or time off.'

The younger women taking part in the study, which was funded by shampoo and hair dye company Clairol, tended to colour their hair to get noticed or to reinvent themselves ahead of a big event.

Older women said the covering up of grey hair and signs of ageing boosted their confidence.

Almost 80 per cent of those polled said they would choose to go blonde over any other colour. Black was the least popular colour.

Dr Sergeant now plans to compare the attitudes of natural blondes with bottle blondes and to investigate whether men are similarly affected by a change of hair colour.

But, while blondes may have more fun, they are less successful than brunettes in work, according to other research.

A survey of 3,000 women revealed that, on average, brunettes earn £4,250 a year more than blondes.

Brunettes are also more likely to marry a millionaire, with research showing that around two thirds of the world's richest men have a brown-haired partner.

The good news for redheads is that they apparently have the best sex lives.

A study of hundreds of German women found those with red hair had more partners and had sex more often.
I'd hardly refer to a study of a likely self-selecting group of 200 participants as "valid," but it's a fun article anyway.

In my ... uh ... .research, I'd say that fake blonde hair does typically match an outgoing personality more than any other dye color, but I'm not sure about natural colors. I can definitely agree with the conclusion at the end, though, and I think there's some truth to the stereotype of the crazy redhead (which is why they tend to be a lot of fun, even as just friends.)

No particular questions or directed discussion points, I think we all know where this thread is going to go.

That's like a normally reserved and shy guy putting on an Armani shirt and getting a hip haircut and thinking he's the shit. He'd have more confidence, more likely to feel attractive, etc.

I don't think blonde hair has anything to do with it but more with people adhering to the standard that supposedly blonde hair makes you more attractive and acting the part without even realizing it.

Interesting, It seems to me that it is sort of a self fulfilling prophesy though.

So

Blondes have more fun

Redheads have the best sex life

Brunettes earn the most money

Never been happier to have dark reddish brown hair :p

ratbastid 09-25-2008 04:10 AM

I'll take my hot, slightly geeky, dark-haired girls any day.

Placebo effect maybe?

Fun article though, hehe.

Interesting positive effect for a recessive trait.

Exactly.

BTW, I'm making a run for the glass ceiling of the "best sex life" claim.

I have blonde hair with just a tinge of red, a kind of light strawberry blonde, but my pubes are bright red --well, actually kind of orange-- and I don't shave. My ex used to say that the most beautiful thing in the world was red hair in the sunlight, and on Sunday mornings, would try to get my to lie on the bed so this patch of sunlight landed on my pussy.

But I think most of the thing with hair is for girls/women to constantly talk about and fuss over their hair. I think most guys don't care that much one way or the other about hair. They seem more interested in tits.

Maybe people are now just playing into the stereo type. In the beginning it was said that men were attracted to blondes because their hair looks bright and shiny like gold, so the saying came that blonds had more fun, thus creating a generation of girls who thought that with blond hair they too would have more fun and it shows in their personality, thus attracting men, who will then in turn say that blondes have more fun. ARG! The cycle never ends lol.

I have never dyed my hair so I have all of my own natural highlights which include black, brown, red and even a handful of blonde hairs. My hair to most people just looks black or dark brown but in the sun it sparkles with all the colors. And I think I would feel hideous with blond hair so I think as a natural brunette I have as much fun as I can handle.

I like to cycle through brunette and blonde... even red sometimes. I haven't found that my lifestyle truly changes when I have blonde hair.

I'm not sure about that redhead conclusion....I was/am naturally auburn(hair was bright copper as a kid) and my sex life is not that great, but my love life is fantastic ;)
But, because of my hair color and maybe despite it, I have been pegged "firey" and I can be quite emotional.
I have friends that are natural "carrot-tops" and they aren't any more or less passionate that I can see.
I think sometimes we just start living up to the ideas people have based on our appearance, over time. *shrug* Blondes are the fun ones, but it's the simple brunette you bring home to mother, that sort of thing.

Interesting results indeed.

Hmmmm. Interesting concept. I wonder how different my life would be if I were blonde. Somehow I don't think there would be a drastic difference.

Reading your description itself is so hot!!!

I personally think the whole blonde thing is a stereotype

mixedsubstance 10-03-2008 07:56 PM

Most women who are blonde have constantly dyed/bleached their hair, so it's fried their brains. Kidding. But...it's possible.

I used to be blonde...but then I've been dark for over 8 years now...and will never go back...though I do have a blonde chunk in my bangs because I like the dramatic look...not because I want to have just 'some' fun. :p I just think I look older with dark hair, plus I hated all the blonde jokes.
