cycle & fertility
I vaguely remember in a college health class that we talked about how fertile a woman is at various times during the month and how this can be used as a version of "natural" birth control. My wife and I were looking to use this information to assist the effectiveness of the pill. I can't find anywhere on-line that talks about this and can't remember what we learned in class about it. Is anyone aware of the breakdown of days? For example...days 1-5 after period are the least fertile or most fertile.

To get a better understanding on where in the cycle you are, install menstral on your mobile phone. It keeps track on her periods and show you in a color coded calendar when she's fertile, or "safe". A really nice, and free, program.
(The calendar is really nice when planning a romantic weekend - you can se the estimated future periods and rest of the cycle) Menstral : Menstrual Calendar for Mobile Phones |
As long as you don't rely on this method solo. One of my daughters was a product of the rhythm method, although at the time I ran a solid 28-day cycle. Your reliability may vary.

You know the joke, though. What do they call people who rely on the rhythm method? "Mommy and Daddy". |
The rhthym method is old and unreliable. What streep is referring to is probably the sympto thermal method, which is taught in the practice of "Natural Family Planning" which my wife and I practice. My wife is very fertile, we conceived immediately both times we tried. From our experience (and the data supports it) using the sympto thermal method is very effective. The hard part is actually practicing it, it requires learning, discipline (taking temperature every morning), and abstinence during fertile or unsure times. The other hard part is that from our experience, a woman is most "horny" when thy ARE fertile. The bad news is that I'm not sure this can be combined with the pill, as the pill affects your hormones which the sympto thermal method essentially monitors thereby determining where you are in your cycle. Read up on it, it might still be for you.

It isn't online, but you should really buy . We used this book while trying to get pregnant, but the book works both ways.

body temperature method works for most
record body body temperature at some time every day in the morning for 3 to 4 months. If you see a decent pattern then you can rely on it. Calculate mid-point between the MAX and MIN temperature recorded (min + max) / 2. The days when her body temp is far below the mid-point is non-fertile. Most people do this exercise when they want to get pregnant :) |
Thanks for all the info everyone!!! We are thinking of using this in addition to the Pill and then during Fertile times using a condom. I understand that it is not 100% fool proof but there really is only 1 thing that is. Again thanks for all the resources.

Look up Ovulation. That will help you out.
|
Given that the Pill prevents ovulation from occurring, I'm not sure how helpful the symptothermal method would be, because the cues that cause a woman's basal body temperature to rise or fall predictably aren't there if ovulation isn't taking place. Methods using cervical mucus to judge won't work either, as the Pill is designed to thicken cervical mucus. Plus, the hormones in the Pill force a woman into an artificial 28-day cycle.

When we were going to the fertility specialists we were told the opposite. Over a three month period of time, I used a temp chart and there were definitive dips in temperature-the day after those dips were the most fertile times and after the charts were analyzed at the clinic, we were told to have sex two days before the drop and two days after. Ovulation occurs during the rise, so if you see a drop in temps, the fertile period is about to begin. The least fertile time is the peak before the drop, about a week or two before if she's normal. ngdawg, I did not know about 2 days before the dip part!
I was told that right after the dip, there is increase in temperature, and that is when you are fertile. Doing it one more time 2 days before the dip is good anyways ;) Thanks again |
I've heard you can use this to choose the sex of your baby.
|
I have heard about the sex selection, will never try that though!

ngdawg, is correct. The example temp chart in above link explains it crystal clear. Thank you so much |
