Marriage and UK Cigarettes
I'd like to hear any sort of discussion on the definition of marriage, the "institution of marriage" as the CC calls it, and any sort of argument against same-sex marriages being recognized on a state and federal level.
Personally, I don't understand how a consensual relationship between two people of the same gender is "immoral" or can in any way be legislated against. I think we are, as a society, past having to regulate sex acts that occur between two consenting adults in the privacy of their own bedroom let alone prevent them from getting into committed relationships and have their commitment be recognized.

It all has to do with America supposedly being based and run by Christians. The christian faith can't allow same sex marriages. And as much as people like to believe in seperation of church and state look at the big fuss when Kennedy was going to be elected president as a catholic or the media coverage on Liberman being Jewish. To many "red blooded good old boys" are in office and are still voting to let same sex marriages become law. Not to mention all of the churches and rallies that would put pressure on the government. When the majority doesn't want it happen, then the minority be damned. On a side note, same sex marriages are never going to be legal when some places still have laws that say homosexual sex is illegal. If I can find the link I'll post it, anyway earlier this year a couple was arrested and jailed for having homosexual sex in there hotel room....

I don't think diversity has anything to do with it. The country was settled by Puritans, and many of the laws on the books are Puritanical in nature. Witness the "Blue Laws" regarding alcohol on the east coast, which are just beginning to come down. The problem is that no lawmaker wants to appear to support drinking, so they don't want to be the first to push for changes. It is the same problem with same sex legisation. Lawmakers probably fear being suspected of homosexuality were they to push for reform of those laws. Philadelphia recently took a hit when the state repealed the rights of homosexual couples regarding sharing of health benefits. It's idiotic. I have no idea how anyone can actually be opposed to same sex couples having the same rights as heterosexual couples.
