Hati, Aristide, and what can be done.
The title is sort of misnomer. I'm actually asking what you think should be done, not suggesting what I think. I really do not have enough information on the current situation of Hati self-governance
I was reading This story this morning about Aristide wanting to return and be placed as interm leader, and I had to sit and think, "wait, I'm confused. Wasn't he the problem to begine with?" So my question is, what should be done with Aristide? He seems to come off in this artical as living in this little fantasy world where people support him en mass, and if they would just let him return and led the country, everthing would be okay. Even worse, it seems like he think he has some right to lead the country again. What are your thoughts?

Aristide has a tremendous amount of support in the country. He has always been a champion of the poor there, and they still love him. If there was a fair election now, he'd probably win. There really isn't any organized opposition to him and no clear candidate has emerged who is likely to win.
But he is a problem, as you point out. He's probably assassinated many of his political opponents, and probably rigged the 2000 election. I think they should go ahead and have the election in the fall as scheduled. But if Aristide gets elected, then it's going to be a tough one for the U.N. to resolve. EDIT: to answer the thread's question, if he's not elected, then of course respect the outcome. If he is elected in a fair vote, then let him return, but under some kind of close international supervision. Last edited by raveneye; 04-19-2005 at 07:43 AM.. |
