US Discretionary Budget

http://www.deviantart.com/view/9410862/

Quote:
The 2004 Federal Discretionary Budget
782 Billion

The discretionary budget is that amount of money that Congress has direct control of; essentially, the money taken out of your paycheck under Federal Income Tax. Corporate and Excise taxes also contribute a small portion to the total. Military spending accounts for over half of the discretionary budget. However, when the White House releases its budget pie graph it includes mandatory expenditures such as social security and medicare. This is misleading because Congress has no control over manditory expenditures. This graph is representation of your tax dollars and how your elected officials choose to spend it. This is the 2004 budget and your money is already being spent. The president has proposed the 2005 budget but it wont be enacted until October 1st. There is still time to make changes. Participate in democracy, understand how your taxes are being spent, and contact your congressperson if you disagree.

Military spending: 399 Billion
Non-Military Spending: 383 Billion

Any surprises?

I like the department of the treasury:
10.437 billion for the IRS and 0.058 billion for the Finantial Crime Enforcement.

Wow! Amazing picture...simple as that. The second link to the pic doesn't seem to work now, but the first link does.

Look how much is going to the Department of Education compared to most of the other departments. The Dept. of Energy- Nuclear Weapons Functions is getting 17.296 billion dollars, for what?

Edit: I'm finally Tilted!

I was always looking for a breakdown like that, great picture. It must've taken a lot of time to compile. It's amazing how much the department of defense receieves compared to the department of education.
