Promises to Iraq
It seems there is lots on confusion amongst the populace of Iraq. No one know what is happening or when they'll have a government on their own. There's also a lot of anti-US/British sentiment arising from this confusion.
It seems strange that Bush or Blair has not broadcast directly to the Iraqis a number of promises in terms of boundary conditions that the coalition will operate under. I'm not talking about detail but more gneral promises eg, "The coalition promises to create a democratic Iraqi governement within election in 6 months" or "The oil is your oil - any profit is going in to a trust fund for the Iraqi governemnt" A lot have this had been said but via the media which always puts its own spin on it - why doesn't it get said directly to the Iraqi people?? Would have thought this would be a good thing to do. |
They did say that, in a broadcast to the Iraqi people. It was being aired by a US air-based TV station (yes, in a plane).
However, if the people in Baghdad (and other places) don't have electricity, they cannot see these broadcasts, now can they? :) |
they need to completely restore order there first before making any promises

I can only imagine the mayhem going on there now....

From what I understand things are starting to get better as far as day to day life for most of Iraq. I'm sure it will take a while to recover and form a Govornment and new infrastructure, but it will happen soon. Don't think a demonstration of a thousand or so people represents the mood of an entire country. I'm sure some people are upset, but also lots are ecstatic to be rid of the regime. What you see and hear are the rabble rousers much like the war protesters who were on the news nightly but represented but a tiny minority of the actual public opinions.
