Last week, when asked if he wanted Powell to stay on to oversee the Mideast peace process Bush told reporters: "I'm proud of my secretary of state. He's done a heck of a good job."

Powell told reporters that he had had several conversations with the president, but would not comment on what they said.

Very interesting. He did about as well as anyone could have.

I wonder who would take over Secretary of State?

Powell reportedly handed in his resignation Friday. But the president has not yet accepted his resignation. For some months, he's been non-committal about his plans for a second Bush term.

Earlier this month, Attorney General John Ashcroft and Commerce Secretary Don Evans resigned. Last week, Bush named White House counsel Alberto Gonzales to take Ashcroft's place.

In a handwritten, five-page letter to the president, Ashcroft wrote that "the objective of securing the safety of Americans from crime and terror has been achieved." But he goes on to say that the Justice Department would be "well served" by "new leadership and fresh inspiration."

Evans is a close friend of Bush's from Texas. He wrote that while "the promise" of Bush's second term "shines bright," he believes it's time to go home.

CNN reported that there is a lot of speculation that Condoleezza Rice will be offered Powell's position.

According to one official, Powell expects that his departure date will be sometime in January, but it's not immediately clear whether he will leave before Bush's second inauguration on Jan. 20.

In the meantime, he will go about his usual schedule, which includes a meeting later in the day with the Israeli Foreign Minister. He also will attend a multinational conference on Iraq next week.

Powell had a 35-year career as a soldier, rising to the rank of four-star general. His last post, from October 1989 to September 1993, was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In that position, he oversaw the U.S. military during the first Gulf War.

He was raised in New York City's South Bronx and later graduated from City College of New York.

Between his military service and time at the State Deparment, he wrote a best selling autobiography and led a nonprofit group called America's Promise -- The Alliance for Youth. He was also frequently mentioned as a possible presidential candidate.

It will be interesting to see who the other four resignations are. I actually kinda liked Powell, despite his UN Iraq report fiasco. Hopefully his successor won't be another guy in the administration I have to hate.

It appears Education Secretary Rod Paige will also be stepping down. I don't know anything about him though, so I have nothing to comment on that. Here's a link: Rod Paige

When I first heard this I went "Oh shit...". Whoever takes over for him has some big shoes to fill. First Ashcroft, now Powell, and a few more reported to be leaving. It makes you wonder why so many of Bush's cabinet members are leaving. Hmmm...

So far, the turnover seems about normal, four or five people leaving. I don't think W. would let Rummy go, even if it is just to avoid the impression some are already giving that something bad must be afoot.

I hear Danforth may be in the running. I wonder if he is a big enough player for this job.

Powell from where i'm sitting seems like a decent man. This is perhaps why he wants to leave, all i remember of Powell appearing on the TV was all pre Iraq war. I think he realises that it was entered into on the premise of mis-information.

Hopefully he'll bounce back he was the only one i trust in the Bush camp. One more point does he not have cancer or am i wrong about that? if i'm not then that could be another reason for his leaving.

Donald Rumsfeld quit/leave - not while Bush is there.

i am not surprised b this at all--i saw powell's term as an exercise in sustained humiliation for him, being forced to carry shit for a far right administration. the low point being the presentation before the unsc before the iraq war. i wonder if the administration will try to replace him with another moderate that can be humiliated, but i suspect that game has grown tired for them.

beyond that, waiting to see if state goes the direction of justice in terms of replacing one reactionary with an even worse reactionary.

He was the sole voice of opposition until a sudden change of heart, maybe (only speculation after this point) due to an order to fall into line or get out of the cabinet.

Another moderate voice squelched by this admin., nothing new here. Does this administration now have anyone who served in a war or does this resignation solidify the chicken-hawk bloc? I was a little down about this resignation this morning, but really it seems that he's been ostracized and ignored for the past four years so I'm not sure there will be much of an impact or vacuum. Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld are so intimidated by Powell that they shut him out of all the foreign policy decisions they could, including the planning for our current Iraq quagmire. Remembering Powell's role in the 1991 gulf war doesn't exactly make me think of him as a "charismatic lightweight."

I dunno, i'm normally one to hop on the "HE WAS PUSHED OUT' bandwagon, but seriously, i remember powell saying he was only going to serve 1 term as sec of state. I am sad that he stuck to that as i remember something recently saying he may stay on a 2nd term, but all in all, i don't see this as a surprise

I'm pretty sure that it's tradition for the Cabinet to resign when a president is re-elected, and then the president can re-appoint them or something.
Don't remember where I read that, though...
