I'm not talking about those not voting because they are not represented on the ballot, although I think you would make an arguement for very few of us being completely represented on any ballot by a single candidate. I, for example, like the positions of both major candidates on different issues. I think a lot of us are like that.

No, I am talking about those too lazy to vote or those who don't care enough to vote. Those people have no respect for those who have died to give them that privalege and have no understanding of their responsibility to the nation. I will say again, with great freedom comes great responsibility. My belief is that those who do not accept that responsibility do not deserve that freedom.

I stand corrected (ignorant fool that I am) I meant ignorant in the sense of (quoteing your source) "3: lacking basic knowledge; "how can someone that age be so ignorant?"; "inexperienced and new to the real world" [syn: inexperienced]" see also: stupid

There are actually very good reasons to conciously not vote. And by conciously, I mean be informed of the issues and candidates.

But I will wait until after the election to begin that discussion.

I kind of like that sentiment myself.

Australia has compulsory voting and whilst that ensures the government cannot be accused of only representing a minority of the people (like what has happened in the US), it also leaves a slightly sour taste in my mouth.

People should be encouraged to vote. It should be explained to them that it is there civic duty. But I don't really think they should be forced to vote.

Conversely, no one should have their right to vote with-held.

Yes, the whole idea of mandatory voting is, IMHO, wrong. It is like having to contribute x number of posts before you can see the boobies
