Opening night of the RNC. Let's play pundit.
I just finished watching the opening night of the RNC on ... pick your poison (MSNBC, FNC, CNN and CSPAN). I can already see the theme; GW is the great leader against the war on terrorism. But despite all of that, what were your thoughts on the keynote speakers? I found John McCain moving. I almost felt the warmth that I felt following the days after 9/11. Rudy, I thought threw out the red meat that the base was expecting and added a bit of anecdotal humor that the president needed. I thought that over all the republicans, tonight anyhow, were the winners over the opening night of the DNC. So please share your thoughts on the RNC opening night. Republican or Democrat. All of us here respect each others thoughts and this is a place of learning and sharing. So please. Be respectful to each other. Just honest opinions. No flames please!

Rudy once again repeated the discredited BS about Kerry saying he was "anti-war." Not that I would mind if Kerry were anti-war. In fact, I would prefer it...

Thought it was interesting. As usual, glossing over anything that isn't black and white, ignoring nuance, skipping the fact that the war on terror isn't going well. It's amazing how disciplined the conservatives are, repeating "flip flopper" over and over like a mantra. I doubt that we'll hear anything at this convention that isn't about the "War on Terror" and how Shrub is making America safer. Nothing about the economy, nothing about education, nothing about healthcare, nothing about domestic issues at all.
McCain and Guliani were good, but Guliani in particular went on too long. I got tired of hearing "war on terror." I suspect by the end of this thing I'll be REALLY tired of hearing it. The crowd seemed to be very enthusiastic, which is to be expected. This convention is going to be like a old time tent revival. |

Opening night? Disgusting
Cheapens the sacrifice of any veteran that has been injured in combat, even though they mean it to just be a dig at Kerry's service (Which is equally disgusting anyway) I won't be watching anymore. Beyond that it was straight attacks on Kerry anyway. I'll keep up to date on it through the Daily Show. |

watching the conventions for either party is like watching a busy, long, boring infomercial.
the crowds are enthusiastic in that i-like-whatever-victoria-principal-is-hawking kinda way--except that, as superbelt pointed out above, they are frequently far more tasteless. the speakers are like petit bourgeois real-estate tycoons lounging on yachts giving viewers different ways to gouge the disadvantaged. take your pick. i would rather watch clothes dry.

Convention should be all about showcasing the party and it's candidates ideas. Just ignore everything else and be positive about yourself.
Give me Barack Obama's speech over Ted Kennedy and Rudi Guiliani any time. |

The conventions should be done away with. Just a big waste of time and money. When was the last time something was actually decided in a convention? I think the democratic convention in 1956 when John F. Kennedy lost the vice president nomination.
