Frustrated, U.S. Arms Team to Leave Iraq Empty-Handed

http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp...nguage=printer

Quote:
BAGHDAD -- The group directing all known U.S. search efforts for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq is winding down operations without finding proof that President Saddam Hussein kept clandestine stocks of outlawed arms, according to participants.

The 75th Exploitation Task Force, as the group is formally known, has been described from the start as the principal component of the U.S. plan to discover and display forbidden Iraqi weapons. The group's departure, expected next month, marks a milestone in frustration for a major declared objective of the war.
We went into Iraq to remove the threat that these WMD posed. That's what the war was about. So where was/is the sense of urgency in searching for these WMD?

The Pentagon had a list of 600 suspected sites before the war began. Thus far, we have only been to around 70 with no luck. Some sites have been looted by Iraqi civilians before we could even look around. Now we're replacing this Task Force with an "Iraq Survey Group", who will make searching for WMD "only a small part" of their work. What's the deal?

President Bush and his supporters said the real threat would come from the possibility of these WMD getting into the hands of terrorists. Why then didn't we make it a priority to ensure that such a transfer did not occur? The administration says that because Saddam's regime fell, there is no more danger of this. But if we have no idea where the weapons are, how can we be sure they are not in enemy hands? The looters had no trouble getting their hands on nuclear material. Why couldn't terrorists do the same?

We went into Iraq to remove the threat that these WMD posed. That's what the war was about. As of right now, we have not removed the threat. In my opinion, until we do, this war will not be won.

The war is won regardless of what is found or not found. Perhaps the change taking place at the top is part of the reason for your concern - apparently someone else had concerns about what was and was not being done also. There are all sorts of things that have happened that have caused problems - the biggest problem was caused by success! It's ironic that the resistance that was expected and planned for simply wasn't there. The will to fight was gone. The willingness to destroy what was left was not gone. Looting and subsequent arson etc. has made the job of those looking for the wmd all but an impossibility (as the article used as a source suggested). Until all of the POWs have been processed and there has been time to actually look for these things has passed I don't think anyone should assume they do or did not exist .

So what's needed is time to "find" these stealthy WMD's. Oh, so what the rest of the world was saying was needed before the attack.

HAHHAHA, Brilliant statement Simple_min!

I think the US is going to look pretty bad if they don't come up with 'the smoking gun'. This is how they originally justified the war, this is the agenda they tried to push through the UN. Now there appears to be nothing. This will do nothing but hurt the US internationally.

Nothing happened to it, they still have it.

My understanding is it was washed down with some caustic substance by the Iraqis, but we're taking it apart to sample surfaces that might not have been hit with the wash.

There still are not other uses for the truck that I heard other than producing biological weapons. (Unless someone wants to argue that this was a baby formula truck painted in camoflage.)

I think the most important part of maximus' post that has not been addressed is "where was/is the sense of urgency in searching for these WMD?"
If the Iraqi regime did in fact possess nuclear/chemical/biological weapons, I would LOVE it if we found them, because those would be weapons that could not find their way into the hands of other enemies of the US. Shouldn't we be running all over the country trying to grab any weapons up so they can't be spirited off to be sold on the black market to some group bent on attacking us?

I'm hoping when we do find these mysterious chemical weapons the equipment has "Made in USA" stamped somewhere on it.

That way, we anti-Iraq war people can be right either way.

Didn't Donnie Fumsfeld keep the Fedex reciepts from the 80's? He could go to the UN, and go "Hey! Look! I told you so! Look at all the weapons of mass-destruction we sent them! they must have some left!".

Is there any official word on whether this is a permanent halt to the search for WMDs, or could this simply be a temporary thing? It would be rather silly for the US to run around the country, looking in places the Iraqis would have cleaned out anyway. With more and more Iraqi leaders being picked up, chances are someone will spill the beans. That'd be a much more effective way to look for these weapons, methinks.

Haha this is great,
"now we won the war, the reason why we started it is of no importance.
so lets see:

iraqi freedom:
- USA has trouble to their people to work, or why was garner fired? USA seems not to have a decent plan for a "free" iraq but of course it should not fall into the hands of the fundamentalists and is has to be USA friendly, imagine the new "free" iraqi goverment making deal with france, no way!

- WMDs:
none found, but we don't need to find them now, they were cool when we needed a reason for the war....

credibility, what is that?

I heard Dr. Germ - the woman in charge of the bi-warfare has been caught. Maybe She'll be able to lead the US to the smoking gun they so desperatly need.
