I HAVE A SCREAM...

Dean scream gaining cult-like status on Web
By Blake Morrison
USA TODAY

It's been dubbed the ''I Have a Scream'' speech, delivered on -- of all days -- the Martin Luther King holiday.

Howard Dean, off a disappointing showing in the Iowa caucuses, let loose with a primal scream Monday night that seems to have inspired a generation.

By Wednesday, the young voters that Dean had hoped to attract -- or at least the techno-wizards among them -- had set his words to music and created a handful of audio remixes that contained all or parts of Dean's 61-word screed. The more educational ones even featured Dean's dramatic reading of the names of 13 states.

But the highlight of the mixes was the creative use of Dean's closing shriek.

Transcripts of the speech say Dean uttered the word ''Yes!'' The ear registered ''Yeeeeeeeearrrrrrhhhhh!''

David Letterman: ''Here's what happened: The people of Iowa realized they didn't want a president with the personality of a hockey dad.''

He had a hoarse throat that gave out at an inopportune time.

Superbelt I'm hoping Dean wins as much as anyone, but hoarse or not, the scream was a scream.

It was more of a shriek. Pretty poor performance, I thought it was the most obviously faked enthusiasm ever.

Well I honnestly think he was going for more of a 'war cry' but instead it came out a mad sounding screach. He was obviously very hoarse and the intent of the scream was pretty clear, it just sounded horrible.

Does everyone have the dance remixes of the scream? If not, they are available here. Enjoy!

It really is just a horrible thing to watch. I was giving my son a bath when I heard this "person" screaming, so I came out to see what it was and low and behold it was Dean screeching his way into American Politcal Humor History. However, people who were in the room said they thought it was great and appropriate and let' be honest, he came in third and he and his people had more energy than anyone in the Kerry camp(who were frankly just exhuasted and a bit stunned).

Kerry could use a little of Dean's enthusiasm and Dean could use some of Kerry's reserve.

This whole thing makes me want to spew. 'Cause it's just media bullshit. Also, some ignorance on the part of a lot of Americans who've never been to political rallies on the road, or to what used to be called "stump speeches" by political candidates.

In a stump speech, the candidate is on the road talking to a rally of true believers in some locality, and he tells 'em everything they want to hear. He fires 'em up, he gives 'em emotion, and generally acts way more frantic than he would in front of TV cameras. Stump speeches are as old as American politics -- they're called that because the traveling pol would usually stand on a stump to get a little height over the crowd. I saw President Ford give a stump speech to a bunch of senior citizens in a retirement community when he was running for reelection (sorta) in '76, and he was every bit as raucous as Dean was. I was sitting in the front row with the local press (no TV crews were there). I caught some spit on one hand. You get the picture.

But Jerry Ford never acted like that when the TV cameras were around, because while that sort of thing plays well live in front a crowd of supporters, on TV it makes you look like a crazy man. The pols discovered that in the early '50s, when political conventions were first televised. That's when politicians started to get boring.

Howard Dean's mistake, his only mistake, was making a stump speech with the cameras rolling. He's not weird, or crazy, or angry, or at least no more of those things than any other candidate. He just showed you what goes on when the broadcast media's not around. And gave you a very good example of why most pols are false and plastic and rehearsed on TV. Too risky to be others.

In the last 3 days I've heard that scream over 1,000 times on conservative talk radio shows. It never gets old. Even Phil Hendrie is using it multiple times in his show.

Just for the record, for the day, Teddy was a moderate/left leaning politician. By today’s standard he would be to the right. He didn't believe in hand outs and he didn't believe in people getting exploited.

Now back to your regularly scheduled, predictable debate.

Oh my!
One of our presidential candidates expressed some emotion!
Quick! Let's flock over to someone who expresses their meaning through military aggression!
Passive aggression is so much more refined - and we can go on ignoring the issues while we laugh with Letterman....

There was an article in a local paper that put the issue raised by this "event" really well, IMHO:

The question now is, will Howard Dean be a part of what his campaign has started?

Personally, I agree that he will most likely not get the nomination now that he has (horror of horrors!) been shown in the media giving a stump speech. I just hope that whoever ends up taking the lead, I'm guessing Kerry at this point, attempts to learn something from Dean's early success and build/maintain a forum where people can feel that they're directly involved in the campaign, and hopefully keep that community together and active in effecting positive change *after* the campaign as well.

So gore was too stiff, dean is too passionate. Wow, talk about issues of vital political importance. This whole issue just paints the election process more as a beauty contest than as a political process.

I think Dean has just been riding the anti-right wave for a while and he's been the loudest and most divisive so he's gotten the most press. This is why there has been such a big deal about him being the frontrunner. But I think when you get down to it he's not getting the moderate left, and his momentum has run out. I think Kerry will get this nomination and it will be another photo finish election. If Dean gets the nomination I don't think it would end that close, 4 more for Bush in that case. I really like Edwards, Gephardt, or Kerry. At least if Bush loses the election I think they would make decent presidents. Not to say I will vote for them though.

His momentum has not run out. His poll numbers have begun to rise again after a good showing at the debate, an interview with Diane Sawyer and an appearance on Letterman last night.

He most likely will not be able to catch Kerry at this time, but he will place a respectable distance away. And with a good showing, that would leave Dean sitting ok for the rest of the primary, where his support is much more firm anyway.

I haven't had a chance to go here and see the video, as for the weekend I am limited to a dialup connection. But I have been told that this is a first hand video of Dean and his infamous speech (taken by a supporter who is standing in the crowd). And the thing that will be evident when watched is that you can barely hear Dean speak at all over the crowd noise. A stark contrast to the professional video equipment employed by the media to zero in on his personal audio and negate the roar of the crowd.

It's too bad something like this will never gain the media exposure that the "Yearp!" video does.
