Black market

The Cuban Government passed a decree last year that the internet could only be accessed using a more expensive telephone service charged in US dollars, not generally available to ordinary Cubans.

E-net customers who do not have the dollar phone service can still access the internet legally by buying special cards at Etecsa offices.

Some Cubans also can use international email and a government-controlled intranet at work and in schools.

But until now many people have been using computers and internet accounts borrowed or bought on the black market, and it is they who will be affected by the new law.

Blackout

The previous system allowing access to the web granted many Cubans a rare opportunity to observe western media and news reports.

Global television news channels are only available at luxury hotels which are off limits to Cuban tourists.

It is feared that as well as "blacking out" this window on the world, the new move to further limit web access could also damage Cuba's main source of foreign revenue: the tourism industry.

Thousands of ordinary Cubans have relied on the internet to advertise private accommodation for foreign tourists.

Those three have spoken about the benifits of Castro and his govenrment. So I am eagerly awaiting to hear how this is really a good thing from those misguided three.

No they haven't They have all either said that he isn't the unbelievable monster others have portrayed him as or argued against the crippling sanctions which only serve to strengthen his hold on power and hurt the average cuban.

Not one has spoken about the benefits of Castro.

Out of all of the shitty things castro has done you choose his efforts to limit access to the internet to be like, "See, castro is evil, what do you non-cuba haters have to say about that!?!?"

Maybe castro, in trying to be more like china through internet restrictions, is trying to get some kind of favorable trade status. (I know it was clinton, so you don't have to waste your breath reminding me of that fact)

So what about the article. Dude, methinks that you are under the impression that anyone who opposes Bush or is critical of the USA internationally is a commie. The cold war ended long ago, and there arnt many 'reds under the bed'.

I too am concerned that this is a troll thread and will keep an eye on it.

I think the issue of Castro cutting I-net access could be discussed w/o bringing in what actors think of it.

Personally, I would rather read what you all think about it.

*steps on soapbox* I'm so close to going to fanatical left-wing sites and posting articles extolling the virtues of progressive taxing and big government, just to bring balance to the TFP politics board. Then, I could be just like some people who copy and paste from moorewatch.com and then take credit for the article. *rolls eyes and steps off soapbox*

My stance is any internet regulation (that puts a single toe beyond stopping child porn and the ilk) is a horrible idea because of the international and dynamic nature of the beast.

I was just pointing out he may have made an honest mistake. Typically chastising someone on grammer or spelling errors while ignoring what they were trying to say is rude especially with the tone you used. It just kindof rubbed me the wrong way even though you wern't correcting me.

Hey, I commend you all for sinking to silly arguments instead of trolling and flaming, but is this a thread about spelling names, or is it a thread where I can rant about wishing that our treaty agreeing to not depose Castro had expired when the Soviet Union (our reason for signing it) collapsed?

Come on, let's have some intelligent discussion, and let's all start discussions in a less intentionally provocative way. Can we agree on that? Good, I thought so.
