The gutless idiocracy that is the UN
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,85526,00.html
"While the United States was preoccupied with the Iraq war, Cuban leader Fidel Castro arrested 78 dissidents, journalists and librarians and "tried" them for treason, giving them varying prison sentences of as long as 28 years The Human Rights Commission wanted to send investigators into Cuba and Cuba said 'no.' And yet, today, Cuba gets re-elected to the Human Rights Commission. It raises troubling issues, and that's why the United States is speaking out about it," Fleischer said." These actions have brought cries of condemnation from almost every nation on earth - the Pope has even attempted to intervene to no avail. Cuba was re-elected to the UN Human Rights Commission. The exact same commission that was talking about investigating their earlier actions. It matters not what your political beliefs are in an instance such as this. You do not leave the wolf to guard the sheep. This single act - if you disregard every other maniacle decision made by this organization, is enough to completely destroy anyones ideas of this organization being capable of dealing with any problem, anywhere on the face of the earth. |
Here's an article that discusses a practice called "vote trading" and outlines Amnesty International's proposals for reforms to the UN Human Rights Commission:

The UN is a joke and I'm sure that everyone already knows how I feel about it so I there's no need for me to say anything else. |
Its an embarrassment to host this sorry organization in this country. We need to get the hell out of the U.N. immediately, if not sooner, and boot them over to some third world country. France or Germany as a host comes to mind. They want so badly to be world leaders, let them foot the bill.

The UN could be a solution to a lot of things, its just scary the amount of things it makes worse..... I would rather have a democratic solution to any problem, but human nature prevents us from taking an unbiased view. I guess thats why Solomon was such a revered character... EDIT: PS: Firstly until Cuba comes totally clean about its Human Rights infringements over the past 30 yrs it has no right to sit on any panel. Secondly unless everyone follows that rule, neither do any of the other nations that currently sit on that panel... ...Gonna be a lonely ol' room. |

I think that was done when the UN came into existence. Too late now. Its like opening a new club, after a while any ol' riff-raff get on the guest list. PS. Anount? Just checked my post and it was ok :) |

Did you ever stop to think that letting Cuba onto the council would serve to help bring about human rights in their country?
First, remember that the UN is a forum of world opinion- not a world's government. Second, note that a majority of the world has to deal with human rights violations. Just because we have to deal with Cuba in out backyard does not mean the opinions of the people of Cuba should not be heard. |
The contradiction that the country that leads 'The war on terrorism' is the only country that has been sentanced for terrorism comes to mind.

I can't believe the recent trends in America... I can't believe people are bashing the UN, an organization which has helped hundreds of millions of people, the organization that came up with the human rights.... I can't believe people are preffering war. What has happened to America? Where did it go?
I hope I will wake up from this horrible dream soon. |
I can't even call the UN an organization. When you sit down 50 guys who hate each other and only care about their own gain, nothing will get accomplished. This most recent war illustrates that perfectly.
What is so great about peace? i don't like peace. peace is boring. what is the point of living if you don't have to fight for it. survival of the fittest is how life evolves and that isn't going to happen with peace. |

Well, I would wonder at this: Are humans capable of organizing in another fashion? After a critical mass of humanity conglomerates in one geographic area, leaders arise, some cruel, some altruistic, some wise. Some of these personalities are completely insatiable are far as material wealth and influence(power) are concerned. They cannot be satisfied with a certain level of gain, once they hit a indefineable tipping point, more is the modus operandi. Ex. Medeival Feudal Lords, Mafia Dons, Gang Leaders. Now, within the rubric of politics, local and national, a grand network of favors and accumulation will evolve. We've all seen this on at least the local level. Local level: money often = zoning changes at the expense of the little guy. National level = absurd pork spending tacked onto civil expenditure bills in th legislative branch.
Point? The U.S. Gov't, the U.N., the E.U., are all gross, textbook examples of this. If we disband the U.N., where does it end? What will fill the vacuum? Alternatives? Shaved monkeys, aaugh. |
Shaved monkeys sound acceptable.
