I don't think the solution lies in "more" minorities. I think it lies in better portrayals of the ones that are there already. I can't stand how they insert a minority character into a story, and the character just sticks to the stereotypes. I see this especially with gay people in the media. The gay people I know, are quite offended and annoyed at how they are portrayed. They just play out stereotypes. I was surprised when one of my friends came out and he wasn't very good at matching his clothes and keeping his room tidy and didn't sing showtunes, and could give two shits for parades. Okay I wasn't really surprised, but I was surprised to hear him rant every time he watches tv. They portray asians as always being somewhat nerdy, black guys as party animals and sports-freaks, latinos as having a temper, and italians as always being shady. These are okay to see every once and a while, but surely they could mix it up a bit. Maybe I'm wrong but I think there are all shades of personalities within all shades of skin.

I dont care about variety of people. If all that was on tv was one actor or actress, and that person was talented, I would watch it. Instead of looking for "variety of people" how about you look for quality of show and talent instead?

You must enjoy watching the same boring rehashed programming on tv.

Actually I dont watch TV, thats what I do when confronted with lack of quality. I dont pretend that more people with different skin tones will turn crap into gold.

Cause the idea that tv will be better if a vareity of people are forced on for the only reason to have a vareity of people is naive and unamerican.

You just said that no one is forcing you to watch, but this thread is about forcing more "variety of people" on tv for no other reason than their race. So people are arguing that people should get hired for work SOLEY based on race. How can anyone argue that this whole thread is nothing but racist? For good reasons or bad, giving people work based on skin tone is racist.

Not entirely true. No one's going to step onto the street and pick up random minorities who have never acted in their lives. So, no, not SOLEY.

I'd agree with you if I thought that actors WERE chosen solely for their acting talent. But they aren't. Just as blonde models are routinely chosen over brown-haired models because they play to a greater audience, talented minority actors are often seen as unfit for roles in shows and films. They're nonstandard and unusual, and movie studios aren't going to take the risk with multimillion-dollar budgets on the line.

So you want studios to use actors that will cost them money? Why would they do that?

Quite right.

You had two different points, though, and one of them was that "America will pay to see a talented actor regardless of his or her race," and I think that's bullshit.

What America - what "the majority" wants to see is people like them, typical Americans. And the majority gets what the majority wants, at least in a capitalist economic model. I can't argue with that. I'm just saying it sucks to be in the minority, and it's willful blindness to pretend that it doesn't.

The only things worth watching on tv nowadays are sports and cartoons. The rest has turned to such crap that it pains me to even think about watching it.

So then what is the point of this thread? To make studios make unprofitable movies?

How are you so sure they'll be unprofitable just because they have a variety of characters of different backgrounds etc..?
