WHO/WHAT is the GOP

can some one please explain to me what does GOP stand for in relation to US politics. The papers always say, the GOP this, the GOP that, but the never say what GOP stands for. All i can grasp it that it has something to do with the parties.

PS im not american.

GOP more or less = Republicans.. Less taxes, more guns , pro life, pro military, and not all about the wasteful social programs.

I think this is what you're looking for:
http://nrcc.org/about/history.htm

Quote:
Origin of "GOP"
A favorite of headline writers, GOP dates back to the 1870s and '80s. The abbreviation was cited in a New York Herald story on October 15, 1884; "' The G.O.P. Doomed,' shouted the Boston Post.... The Grand Old Party is in condition to inquire...."

But what GOP stands for has changed with the times. In 1875 there was a citation in the Congressional Record referring to "this gallant old party," and , according to Harper's Weekly, in the Cincinnati Commercial in 1876 to "Grand Old Party."

Perhaps the use of "the G.O.M." for Britain's Prime Minister William E. Gladstone in 1882 as " the Grand Old Man" stimulated the use of GOP in the United States soon after.

In early motorcar days, GOP took on the term "get out and push." During the 1964 presidential campaign, "Go-Party" was used briefly, and during the Nixon Administration, frequent references to the "generation of peace" had happy overtones. In line with moves in the '70s to modernize the party, Republican leaders took to referring to the "grand old party," harkening back to a 1971 speech by President Nixon at the dedication of the Eisenhower Republican Center in Washington, D.C.

Indeed, the "grand old party" is an ironic term, since the Democrat Party was organized some 22 years earlier in 1832.

GOP = Grand Old Party.

& they're pretty much what mojo said.

+ they are conservative (as u might have inferenced) & tend to get intertwined with religion quite a bit. (like most conservative right wing parties)

Thats cute, with that same stroke would you be willing to say that the Dems aren't? Republicans appeal to votes to rich white old folks, Dems do it to poor minorities, it's all about getting the votes.

LOL, you punk! I almost got kicked out of the computer center I am at for bursting out laughing! I'm sure this will eventually spark a flame war though so I need to go and prepare my munitions. In the mean time, that reminds me of an episode of The Family Guy in which Peter hijacks a circus parade and brings it into his back yard for his son Stewie's birthday. I'm sure not a lot of republicans liked this show because it took pot shots at them all the time, but one of the funniest moments in TV history for me was when Peter comes riding in on the back of an elephant and yells, "Look Lois! It's the two symbols of the republican party! An elephant and a big, fat, white guy who's afraid of change!"

True, if the republicans are the greedy old people then we dems are the tree hugging hippies.

Which reminds me I am off to throw money at some of the world's problems now. I hear, that makes them go away and we might as well spend as much of the tax payers money as we can... its the root of all evil anyway. Later all!

You did a great job of presenting the historical background of GOP - thanks for your efforts - and yes, we read your posts, it would just appear in this post that the really "squeeky wheel" got the grease.

I think you mean to say republicans without a sense of humor would not have liked the show very much. If you can't laugh at yourself, everyone else will.
