I think some of what she says has merit.

The problem lies in the fact that the whole concept of political and moral freedom is immediatly discarded by extremist groups, left and right.
This is particularly true of the ethos of right conservatism and soviet communism, both of which share a monopolistic and suppressive instinct. Thankfully, the right conservative form is moderate, where a truer representation of soviet ethos would be fascism. Either way, the important thing to remember is that Joe McCarthy was prosecuting people for legitimately held political beliefs and that this is a crime against the most fundamental basis of the American Republic.

In context. his activities were not as bad, except when you consider that they did stoke many other fires.

I think I'll end up buying her book, sounds interesting enough.

Personally, I think a lot of her opinions resembles a lot of opinions long-time cokeheads have.
She's obviously frightened to death by what she calls "liberals", and Communists. Old fashioned rabid paranoia. I don't care if she's left or right, she's way to incoherent for me to try to decipher. Most of her columns should come with free tinfoil.
