GOP blowing cops for $20
 

I was wondering how it could get worse. Now I know. David Vitter committed a "terrible sin" with a hooker, sure. But Robert Allen offered to blow a cop for $20. At this point I'm alternating between laughter and tears. I don't know what's next for the Family Values party, but I'm pretty sure it will involve bestiality and/or necrophilia.

Seriously, we know politicians are corrupt sickos, but isn't it about time that the Democrats stepped up and did their share again? Stick a cigar into an intern or something.

Florida state Rep. Robert "Bob" Allen, R-Merritt Island, was arrested Wednesday and charged with soliciting an undercover male officer for sex at a park in Central Florida, according to police.

Investigators said Allen was acting suspicious and went in and out of the men's restroom at Veteran's Memorial Park, located on East Broad Street.

Minutes later, authorities said, Allen solicited the male officer inside the restroom, offering to perform oral sex for $20.

Allen was then arrested.

Officers realized he was a public figure after the arrest, a news release said.

Allen, is a former Little League volunteer who also donated time to the Boys and Girls Club, serving on its board of directors.

The Merritt Island resident was born in 1958 and moved to Brevard County in 1964. He attended the University of Central Florida and Florida State University.

He has a wife and a child, according the official Web site of the Florida House of Representatives.

I read this and laughed out loud.....seriously I did. I was even going to make a thread in here but felt I might come off biased, and decided the GOP has more than enough damage control to deal with already.

Jeez, was I like this during the Clinton deal? I hope not. But probably not... that kind of adultery is so much cooler. It connects with the average man, man. (So much the worse for the average man.) Plus, it's not like he made family values the center of his political platform, so he's not a hypocrite, so it's all okay.

Or his comment (lie) today that "because of the actions we’ve taken, al Qaeda is weaker today than they would have been"... at the same time that his National Intelligence Council concluding that the “network is gaining strength and has established a safe haven in remote tribal areas of western Pakistan for training and planning attacks…despite concerted U.S. attempts to smash the network.”

Or a pending confrontation between the WH and Congress over executive privilege and Congress' oversight responsibilities.

Or FBI surveillance abuses....Or........

I saw this, but didn't really think it was discussion worthy... Not because it's state politics, but because Bob Allen doesn't equal the GOP. His actions were thoughtless and stupid, and will doubtless cost him re-election, but they don't rise to the level of an indictment of the GOP - whether or not that party portrays itself as the defender of family values and "morality".

I'll reverse-Shakran here and say that this guy doesn't reflect on the GOP any more than Clinton's transgressions reflected on the Dems as a whole. What those guys did merely spoke to their own personal character and weaknesses.

Hell, I'm still laughing, the politics aside I'd almost rather this end up in Humor.

I'm with tuber, it's about time we stopped making gross generalizations about people as a whole based on the actions of a couple of highly public morons. . . I'm American, that doesn't make me a bad person simply because of a bunch of ignorant racists.

I am more pissed he tried to do it at Veteran's Memorial Park instead of somewhere like Al Gore hanging chad memorial park.

And Dc NJ's dirty deeds do mean alot to me, you see I pay the highest property taxes in the nation, have the highest car insurance rates, among other things that this state was promised to be rectified by the dems over the years, and I think Jim McGreevy's little fiasco was worse than Bob Allens
escapade. How is this for a thread starter based on that?

mike, today's your day! Sharpe James was indicted, and he's a Democrat. Point at that to derail this amusing story.

Let me quote GHW Bush "not gonna do it", this Bob Allen story is quite amusing, I wonder if he said " so I guess you blowing me is out of the question" when the cop whipped out the badge.

And the James story will have a happy ending, he will go to prison, get out then get re-elected by the democrats in his happy little city.

The thread title is rather inflammatory, but I guess it's ok cause it slams the GOP. I guess we're getting more and more selective about what's ok and not around here.

What do you mean by "ok"? It's OK in that it isn't so far out of bounds that it breaks rules and requires intervention. It's OK in that not a single person has reported any post in this thread, including yourself. There have been several posts in this thread that have taken issue with the implications made by the thread title, including mine.

Hell, to leave it there does more to weaken the OP than it does to strengthen it. That's got nothing to do with which side gets slammed.

I suppose the reality of this title comes down to the stance put forward by the GOP in general. Had the republican party not shown itself to be the Anti-Gay,self proclaimed family values party....the title would be pointless. As it is, I believe the OP was intended to show off the broken message in action. While it is definately true this one person does not represent the republican party, he is still a member of it, and by putting "GOP" in the title the OP makes a tie in to an ongoing trend of mixed messages from that particular party. Had the individual been a Democrat...He would still be depraved, but as the Democrats are somewhat less hateful toward Gay Rights it would not be quite as damning.

jorgelito, to compliment what uber said, if you have a problem with a post, including the title, hit the warn button. Posting it in the thread usually won't do much good and just serves to make you look disgruntled. I'd rather you look gruntled. :) And I also agree that while this title approached the line of what's acceptable and what's not, it is on the right side.

I'll agree with most everyone else that this isn't a GOP issue. This is a Bob Allen issue and one for the voters in his district.

I think it's just as damning. Either way, the harm and the immorality are in the adultery. I don't think adultery is mitigated whatsoever by the adulterer not being a hypocrite. The wrong is just as wrong, no better no worse, whether or not he actively preached against the wrong.

The only harm in the hypocrisy is harm to his own reputation for honesty and harm to the reputations of those associated with him. And the latter is only harmful because people invoke the faulty "guilt by association" logic.

The McGreeveys of the world aren't any better than the Robert Allens in my book. Adultery is adultery is immoral. And homosexuality isn't immoral, even if Robert Allen says it is. If Allen's worse at all, he's only worse because he could have predicted a title like "GOP blowing cops for $20" and known that his own reputation wasn't the only reputation at stake. (Though it should have been.)

Fwiw, while I might whine about some content I don't like, I think I've only used the warning button maybe once, because I tend to put a very, very large space between "this annoys me" and "this deserves moderation". Habits from posting at smaller, less-moderated boards I guess.

Fair enough. I posted my "objection" before I saw Uber's warning so the order make it seem off.

Although, I must admit, I fall into the same category as FoolThemAll. I wasn't offended, but rather, I just wanted to point it out because I feel there's a unbalance there. Lately there seems to be the ol' what-is-ok-what-is-not-ok type of stuff and I feel there is a lot of double standards and hypocrisy again (not just in politics).

And he announced over three months ago that he was not seeking reelection to that post either.

Word up.
