territorial congr..con...cont..ah...
For those of you who weren't treated to the latest round of Mr. Bush's verbal acrobatics, he attempted to say "territorial contiguity."
Maybe he is brilliant like some of my follow Republicans assert. But to me, he sounds like a nine-year-old kid, trying to read a speach his dad wrote for him. If you can't pronounce it, maybe you shouldn't govern it. This goes for "the ARDICK wildlife refuge" and "NUKULAR weapons" too. |
and he went to yale?

I sense a flamewar brewing...

Nah, that shouldn't be a criteria on a person's intelligence.
I should know, I know MANY intelligent people, including myself (excuse my immodesty) that at times have difficulty speaking. I feel like Porky Pig sometimes. I say judge a person on what they act on, not what they say. You'll make better calls that way. |
Does speaking measure a persons intelligence? So mutes must be complete idiots.

That having been said, just because someone talks like an idiot or spells like one it doesn't mean that they are one, right Budah?:) You know what they say, don't judge a book by its cover. Bush was smart enough to surround himself with smart people, or at least smart enough to take the advice of someone to surround himself with his current cabinet. |

I think having a president that can't talk correctly though, measures the intelligence of the entire nation he represents. If the president talks like an idiot, the world will assume that most of the population in America is comprised of illiterate morons just like him. While that is true, we don't want the rest of the world to know it.:D |

If you wan't to listen to a president sound illiterate go back and listen to Kennedy saying almost anything and Johnson totally murdering Vitnamb! Course I guess you could probably blame a lot of this on geographical impact on spoken language. Texans and Damn Yankees both sound funny when they talk - Television seems to emphasize those differences. |
I dunno, I don't need a to hear him speak to form the opinion that he is a bit slow. That dosn't mean I think I'm smarter or I don't like the US, just that the man running your country is a dolt:)

LOL! Oh, man, I DESERVE to be flamed! I feel like bashing myself for that one. "Hey, clavus, ya dumbass! Don't ever run for President." And I guess that's my bitch. If it was my job to represent my country, I'd damn well do it it in a manner which didn't make me look like a dumbass. If I knew that certain words were beyond my capacity to use correctly, I wouldn't attempt them in public. |
How the president pronounces a word has no basis for my opinion on him.
I consider myself a fairly intelligent person and I occasionally murder words as well. |
I wish I was as dumb as you guys think George Bush is. I wish I was as smart as George Bush in being able to make you think he's dumb! Back off about half a damn minute and look where he is - then look around.

Some people are great. Some have greatness thrust upon them. Some end up in great spots because their Daddy is well connected and the Democrats ran a weak-ass candidate against them. The debate as to Curious George's mental firepower will outlive his reign. My original, poorly-written point is, the man sounds like a buffoon when he speaks. It embarasses me, as an American, to see my president stumbling through an oration. I can appreciate the fact that some very bright people on this board have trouble speaking. If this applies to you, please do me a favor and don't run for president. I'll mock you. |
Bush has charisma, but he cant read a speech, he can do the "shaking hands and kissing babies" with out problem, he should avoid speeches and have Aril do it.

I'm sorry but being smart and occasionally mispeaking is one thing. When you are the voice and figurehead that represents a nation you should be able to know who your fellow leaders are and be able to pronounce the speeches that are written for you. It's different when your soapbox is the entire governement.

It is not the misspeaking he does, it is quotes like this that scares me:
"It's amazing I won. I was running against peace, prosperity, and incumbency." -- Speaking to Swedish Prime Minister unaware a live television camera was still rolling, June 14, 2001 |
I do think Bush should take some speech lessons (Is that what they are called?), since he is the president. I have the mental image of how a president should be. To me, Bush fails as an orator, but I don't see that as a measure of his intelligence.
Clinton was a great orator, but failed in other areas of the ideal president. Of course, ideal president is based on what I think, so YMMV. |
Well I assume when someone mispronounces a word, or gets tongue-tied, they are speaking off the cuff and not reading a written, rehearsed speach. In 2000, I voted for Bush and was very very very uninformed. I thought it was the media portraying him as an idiot. Anyway, I learn from my mistakes.

Why did I spell speech wrong?
