photographer's dream: peru, machu piccu, and the galapagos
Just got back from that trip, and I had some of the best photography opportunites I've ever had in my life. I'm going to post all the pictures I feel are worth posting, but there are so many, that I'm going to put all the pictures from each day in a seperate post. Some of you might be anxious for pictures from the galapagos, and trust me I'm just as anxious to get to them, but they were the later half of the trip. Here is the first day:
Flew in to Lima, then Cusco. From Cusco we drove to our hotel in the sacred valley, checked in, and then went to lunch at a private "hacienda" up on a mountain. From there we went to visit the Inca ruins at Ollanta y Tambo. Then we stopped by a local "chicheria," a place that makes and sells corn beer. 01: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/30p1.jpg 02: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/30p2.jpg 03: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/30p3.jpg 04: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/30p4.jpg 05: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/30p5.jpg 06: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/30p6.jpg 07: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/30p7.jpg 08: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/30p8.jpg 09: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/30p9.jpg 10: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/30p10.jpg 11: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/30p11.jpg 12: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/30p12.jpg 13: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/30p13.jpg 14: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/30p14.jpg 15: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/30p15.jpg |
These are beautiful, especially the second and eleventh shots.
It looks like you had quite the trip! |
I did...but that was just day one!
|
What an amazing trip. You're right, I'm very much looking forward to the other photos.
One of my dream trips is to Peru to visit the Incan ruins. Of the photos, I'm going to agree with cello on #2. I've always loved mountain photos where the haze sits low and the silhouettes of the mountains rise above the haze. Great shots! |
Shpoop, am looking forward to see your pictorial adventure. Keep 'em coming.
|
Wow, those are incredible. And I agree with liking numbers 2 and 11 the best. They really are fantastic. Thanks for sharing.
|
spectacular.... I love the colors in the first two -- and the stairway in 11 - I'd love on my wall.. :) it's beautiful....
very nice... /me waits patiently for the rest of the trip |
They're all great, but there's something about 29 that I just love... wonderful shots thanks for sharing this experiencewith us...
/me waits patiently for more :) |
Pics 26 and 27 are interesting - actually, #27 is my favorite of the second round. Could you give a description of what I'm seeing here. I can't quite make out what it is, but the geometrics are very appealing to the eye.
|
i actually did give a description in the opening paragraph...it's a salt mine. The salty stream fills all these pools, then they eventually evaporate and leave salt, and then they let the stream fill it again.
|
That looks like a nice vacation. I'm impressed by the people who built places like this with no power equipment, just animals and manual labor. Nice, interesting pictures.

When you reach Aguas Calientes, be sure to take a stroll behind the train station near the field where all the guides stage their equipment. Near the end of the trail is a small wooden bridge extending to a gated area that is manned by a security person. This is the rear entrance to a beautiful and well hidden resort. My wife and I stayed there for a few days in 2001 while on our honeymoon. I too am an amateur photographer and if you want some truly beautiful shots of orchids (hundreds of varieties) and hummingbirds, definitely plan on spending some time there. Ask for Moises, he truly loves his orchids.
Here's an URL with some more info: http://www.inkaterra.com.pe/mpph/index.html Also, don't miss an opportunity to make the hike up Wayna Picchu; it's the large mountain that stands directly behind Macchu Picchu. It takes about two hours, and the view from the top is absolutely breathtaking. I don't want to hijack your thread, but if you would like a sample pic, I would be willing to post. Also, ask one of the guides about the little known ruins deeper in the jungle nearby. Peru is a beautiful country, you're going to have a blast. I look forward to your next series of photos. |
Awesome trip man. Little jealous over here. Wish I was able to do that!
Anyways, great pictures. There are some really great ones for sure. Cheers! |
absolutely beautiful.
<3 little mules. |
Lewis, I'm already done with the whole trip, and uploading the pictures day by day. That is where I stayed (not too unknown anymore though)...got some pretty good pictures there, not too many though. And I regret it, but we didn't have any time to hike up wayna piccu.

Fantastic! Thanks for sharing. Number 11, is that post processed?

day 3:
We woke up, had free time in the morning so I walked around the gardens and took some more pictures there, then we took a train to Machu Piccu. We toured the ruins, and by that time it was time to go back to the hotel and have dinner. 31: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/1p1.jpg 32: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/1p2.jpg 33: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/1p3.jpg 34: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/1p4.jpg 35: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/1p5.jpg 36: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/1p6.jpg 37: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/1p7.jpg 38: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/1p8.jpg 39: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/1p9.jpg 40: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/1p10.jpg 41: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/1p11.jpg 42: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/1p12.jpg 43: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/1p13.jpg 44: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/1p14.jpg 45: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/1p15.jpg 46: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Shpoop/1p16.jpg |
Shpoop, are you able to stay overnite at Machu Piccu?
|
its a little complicated. There is a town at the base of the mountain, I stayed there. Then there is about a 30 min bus ride up the mountain from there...there is a single hotel up at the top actually within the machu piccu sanctuary, and from there its only about a 5 min walk into the heart of the ruins. So I guess the answer is yes, though I did not. But if you are talking about for night pictures, you have to leave the ruins by a certain time and get there at a certain time (though its rediculously early, like 5 or 6), but you cannot camp on the actual ruins themselves. That was a long answer to a simple question, but there it is.

Keep posting your beautiful pics! By the way, here's what you missed from near the top of Wayna Picchu. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/10...ynaPicchu1.jpg Notice how the city is shaped like a condor? |
Now I know where I want to travel to. Great shots, thank you.
|

Excellent shots, I especially love 38 and 45.
Thanks again! |
Looks like you made the most of your trip. Great shots. Lucky Dog.
|
So when were you there? Looks like not to much has changed there. I was in Peru in 74 to 76. Great shots. I like the one of the city from above.
