oh! looks like a new set up in the Sculpture garden. I get to see it on Saturday morning when I go down to victoria and King for my haircut...
nice photos yet again! |
I love this thread! I just went through 8 pages of your world while I'm sitting here in Etobicoke watching a sqlplus script load data into an Oracle database.
I'd love to do a TFP get together. The problem is I live near Kingston and only come to Toronto from monday to thursday. We need to meet for Guinness on a wednesday evening sometime. |
rmarshall... most of us are available for drinks on week nights. Just say the word and I am sure you can haul a bunch of us out for Guinness or two.
And thanks for visiting the thread! Cheers |
A visit by Joe
This past weekend I was graced by the illustrious Paddyjoe and Mrs. Joe.
They were in town for a Memorial Day weekend, catching a few baseball games at the Dome. I met up with them for dinner on Sunday night and spent the afternoon on Monday showing them the distillery district, my neighbourhood, the Riverdale Farm and the Necroplis... Lots of pictures were taken, here are a few. I am hoping that Paddyjoe will post some of his when he gets his film developed. We met at the fountain on Front Street. It is right next to the place where we had our group shot for the last Toronto TFP meetup. http://static.flickr.com/72/156449146_6408e9608a_o.jpg Speaking of which, we went for dinner at Hernando's... this time I ate as well as drank... Mrs. Joe snapped this one (only the second shot in this thread not taken by me). http://static.flickr.com/47/156449196_fc5fa715e6_o.jpg This is a coffee roaster located at Balzac's Coffee in the Distillery District. http://static.flickr.com/66/156449232_3504834e81_o.jpg Coffee roaster detail: http://static.flickr.com/50/156449298_d14adecdf4_o.jpg This is a cool sculpture down one of the back alleys... the more you look at the more you can see figures. http://static.flickr.com/54/156449496_276535afd9_o.jpg There were a couple of old and rusting trucks in a back alley: http://static.flickr.com/76/156449555_166eb1648f_o.jpg http://static.flickr.com/77/156449585_af351cd783_o.jpg http://static.flickr.com/55/156449614_59ee6c9b8a_o.jpg An old bridge in the valley http://static.flickr.com/75/156449656_571d73e692_o.jpg a detail on that bridge http://static.flickr.com/74/156449699_e5ba6e9fb4_o.jpg The Toronto Necropolis (City of the Dead) is full of facinating hisory http://static.flickr.com/68/156449766_d9e42fd99d_o.jpg http://static.flickr.com/68/156449822_846a7a8413_o.jpg http://static.flickr.com/48/156449891_1d9cb7da30_o.jpg http://static.flickr.com/55/156449935_e82be1d740_o.jpg http://static.flickr.com/51/156449983_d67e63a372_o.jpg This is the Don River... it really is a cesspool but here it almost looks serene. http://static.flickr.com/45/156450015_c35e499853_o.jpg Look! Yeah Charlie, a very good time. You've got yourself a fine town, and you're an excellent host (and guide).
Weird ass colors in that phone o yours though. Although I do like the lemon head look....... |

/me jumps on Paddyjoe and gives him a leghug til he turns blue! :icare: Charlatan, don't ever trade your phone in :) |
I second Charlatan being a great host and guide ... I've seen some of the above mentioned places ... always a pleasure to see Toronto with him. :)

Thanks everyone...

Trip to Prince Edward County
A week or so ago the kids and I spent the weekend at my Father-in-Law's new cottage in Prince Edward County. I have found a new place to love...
The house is near a place called Roblin's Mill. The remains of the mill are still there. I didn't get pictures of them this time but I did get some shots of the water course that used to power the mill. The falls just seemed to go on and on... http://static.flickr.com/66/168606503_9ea998e212_o.jpg http://static.flickr.com/75/168606593_deb1b4ffa4_o.jpg http://static.flickr.com/48/168606621_8ed4a96eaf_o.jpg http://static.flickr.com/67/168606648_a45b25370e_o.jpg Some attractive Fungi http://static.flickr.com/52/168606554_329a23a54d_o.jpg http://static.flickr.com/74/168606527_ba35695fbb_o.jpg Oh look! The drugs have kicked in. Zero is a manic dog. http://static.flickr.com/49/168606679_cda9a31fb1_o.jpg The kids and I went to the Toronto Islands twice this week. The first visit was last Sunday when we went with three other families. I got G an all-day pass and he managed to have a great time but poor Z barely scratched the surface of her tickets because there were so many other kids pulling her in other directions. I felt bad so I offered to take her later this week... I ended up taking Z and G today. We spent the whole day there. We did some rides in the morning and then spent the rest of the day wandering the eastern islands, discovered a beach we didn't know, wandered the community and walked the quay... It was a great day. Sadly, most of the pictures have the kids in them so, these will seem a little absent of life. The Swans up close http://static.flickr.com/71/168606717_a8ccce39fd_o.jpg http://static.flickr.com/74/168606741_9b9479688c_o.jpg The skyline from the Ferry http://static.flickr.com/67/168606760_2e4587d8fa_o.jpg One of the other ferries http://static.flickr.com/55/168606874_0647fccbc8_o.jpg And we did... http://static.flickr.com/71/168606913_fddca19404_o.jpg The antique carousel on at Centreville is very cool... http://static.flickr.com/76/168606966_ad1c32c4d8_o.jpg The Ferris Wheel from inside... by the way, when did I start getting sick on a Ferris Wheel... damn I am getting old. http://static.flickr.com/73/168607012_d3c512022c_o.jpg He does... http://static.flickr.com/71/168607049_666e3e5644_o.jpg The bridge that took us to a beach we'd never been to before... http://static.flickr.com/53/168607083_2f32aff8ae_o.jpg Over the bridge and in a place that didn't look much used, was sitting this fully functional and quite attractive water fountain. It just struck me as lonely and missing the crowds of days gone by... http://static.flickr.com/45/168607192_4dc0fcfaf5_o.jpg The Algonquin Bridge to Algonquin Island... http://static.flickr.com/67/168607209_de02a32d12_o.jpg Queen City Yacht Club as seen from the Algonquin Bridge http://static.flickr.com/44/168607230_61a9d35db1_o.jpg Some houses on Algonquin Island... this community is so cool. http://static.flickr.com/39/168607269_799cc91ec6_o.jpg http://static.flickr.com/67/168607346_97fe6f4d90_o.jpg The quay on the Eastern Gap... right across the gap is the dock where the Rochester Ferry used to dock. I LOVE old cottages! And you do the same thing I do, feel sorry for old alone things.
Your pictures have such a surreal quality to them. They're a joy. |
oooo great photos! Thanks for sharing.

I'm loving these latest shots, thanks for taking the time to do this. :D

Nearly abducted!
Beware stealthy aliens when weeding your garden. This one almost got away with me.

No phone, no tv, no motor boat, not a single luxury... except my laptop and the battery's down to 15%. Gah.

thanks Charlatan, it's good to get caught up with your journeys.
|
Hey Janey... thanks for checking in!
Sadly, my phone died just before my big move (walked into the lake with it in my pocket... I know, I am an idiot). I just received my new phone for work and it is a... wait for it... blackberry. with no camera. I am going to have to wait for my replacement treo to get here... or I am going to have to buy a new camera phone. Tomorrow is Saturday. Maybe I should go shopping... It really is driving me crazy... I keep seeing thing that I want to snap with a camera and don't have the ability to do it... |
No new camera phone yet? bummer.
|
No girly... I still have no cameraphone and no camera. I do hope to recieve my new Treo soon.

Nature Reserve and Chinese Garden
This is one of the Salvador Dali statues that are all over town for the next couple of months. I think this one is the only one that will be staying.
http://static.flickr.com/83/244978286_56a1612f40.jpg http://static.flickr.com/94/244978389_d44cf888d5_o.jpg The street corner nearest my flat... http://static.flickr.com/82/244978530_091c48b183.jpg I went for a walk in the Nature Reserve. It is one of only two natural rainforests in an urban setting in the world (the other is in Brazil). We saw monkies a plenty and the odd monitor lizard (sorry no pics of the lizard). Part of the walk took us to the Tree Top Walk, a suspension bridge slung between two of the highest peaks in the area. Stand of Bamboo http://static.flickr.com/90/244978622_188a6d12ac.jpg Monkey on the bridge http://static.flickr.com/98/244978786_9f1cd9ff94.jpg View from the Bridge http://static.flickr.com/86/244978854_9c43d99069.jpg The Bridge http://static.flickr.com/82/244978967_89e749c13c.jpg Today was a trip to the Chinese Gardens out in the west end of the city. Despite what the travel books said, I quite enjoyed it. It is currently full of a little fair and a lot of "lantern sculptures". The Chinese are in the middle of the Lantern Festival which, if I understand correctly, is part of the mid-fall Festival of the Hungry Ghost. http://static.flickr.com/82/245319747_b287ca2b0d.jpg http://static.flickr.com/81/245319671_7cbb37448d.jpg http://static.flickr.com/81/245319596_1e314fdad9_o.jpg http://static.flickr.com/85/245319519_3965241b01.jpg http://static.flickr.com/92/245319445_b04f07ccb5.jpg http://static.flickr.com/93/245319395_bcac427c7f.jpg http://static.flickr.com/89/245319352_23b1433eb6.jpg |
I have been wanting to take a picture of one of these for a while. I think it's an ingenious way to carry coffee.
http://static.flickr.com/84/250386560_e29d067f4b.jpg This is a type of kueh called Lapis Sagu. Kueh's are the Malasian or Peranekan version sweets. They are usually made with tapioca or rice flour and coconut... there are tons of different types of kueh. I was going to show you a picture of my favourite one, but I ate it before I remembered to take the shot. :) http://static.flickr.com/100/250386581_12d8aeb5fd.jpg I visited the Bukit Batok Town Park today. It features a small Lake and rocky area called Little Guilin (named after the city of Guilin in China that has similar landscape only larger). This father and son team were fishing. http://static.flickr.com/113/250386814_85d11f3253.jpg Like many big things, a picture doesn't do it justice. It really was quite beautiful. http://static.flickr.com/109/250386752_75ee82789a.jpg I decided to walk through the park and it turned out to be little more than a dirt path that climbed up the hill and came down into a residential neighbourhood on the other side. Halfway up the hill, just off the path, I came across this shrine. http://static.flickr.com/104/250386694_4a42d9c016.jpg Finally, the view from the top. I am thinking about renting a place in the condo in the middle (it's why I came to the area in the first place). While the view is nice, I think it might be too far out of town for my taste. http://static.flickr.com/86/250386638_6807f1efcd.jpg |

really like this one Charlie.........thanks man. |
Hi Charlatan - the pictures you are posting are great. I love the flavour of the place that you are living in.
|
OMG Char, these are fantastic pictures. I can't believe you're living in such exotic splendor--even more exotic than Canada, which is hard to believe. :D I love the pictures of the pavement (already reposted by flyman), and the colorful floating lotuses (loti?) on the lake.
They thrill and inspire, your pictures. |
Good to see you're back up and running. The monkey on the bridge is priceless. The rock mosaic in the garden is awesome.

Cannes and the Riviera
I was back in the France again last week, this time I managed to smuggle my wife along for the trip...
Just after taking this picture I was hospitalized by a roundhouse kick to the head. http://static.flickr.com/88/272286729_202110478e.jpg The next couple of shots are of some guys fishing on the quay... http://static.flickr.com/81/272288146_66f8cfc596.jpg http://static.flickr.com/85/272288096_65cd260e0c.jpg There is only one reason I can think of to stay inside when it's this beautiful outside... hence the delay in getting outside. http://static.flickr.com/122/272288235_552b79fe12.jpg Life doesn't get too much better than this... http://static.flickr.com/104/272288379_1fe103964f.jpg This is the Chateau where we stayed for the week... Thanks for sharing again. I wish Toronto had such a commitment to public art.
There was a brief article in the Globe and Mail travel section this weekend about the gentrifying Quays of Singapore: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servl...uery=singapore That restaurant might be a good investment. I'd front you $20CDN, but I want free appetizers for life. :D |
That was a cool article.
It's quite true that Singapore has ignored their riverfront for some time. I remember my first visit here in 1997, Clarke Quay was pretty derelict. Boat Quay has been around for years but it's starting to show its age. I suspect it will get a makeover before long. I can only hope that Toronto's recent forward momentum leads to something beautiful and, more importantly, something that people use. $20!!! I am only a few million off my goal. Keep up the good work! It is still Chinese New Year... the celebrations go on for fifteen days. Today was the Chingay Parade down Orchard Road. Here is a shot I took of the floats marshaling for the dress rehearsal last night. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/155/4...3746fbfe24.jpg Some red leafy things I saw while out for a walk today. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/137/4...7551a9fe4f.jpg One of the many pedestrian bridges in Sinapore. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/166/4...e5a6b29af2.jpg The clouds rolled in and there was a few hours of rain today. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/137/4...918ef9432a.jpg I took this down by the river the other day. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/137/4...efa386b1b8.jpg |
as always.....great journey Charlie...thanks man
