abstracts.

I know a lot of people like to play around with abstraction in their photography.

For myself, they are sometimes deliberate and sometimes 'happy accidents.' Doesn't matter either way as I see it.

This thread is a place to share some of your favorite non-narrative photos.

(Note: I'm about two months into a project to re-edit all of my older photo sets - I'm all the way up to June 2007, woohoo! - so as I move forward (and delete older editions from flickr) old threads of mine in this forum will become full of blanks. Just so folkses knowses...)

ALSO, it would be especially cool if folks who don't normally participate in this forum do so on this thread. Grab that phone and photograph the sidewalk, a storefront, tree bark, whatever...it's fun. :)

I too would like to encourage folks to participate. I'm newish to digital photography
& still learning about all these newfangled buttons & settings.

This was a "happy accident". I was actually trying to get photos for a "motion"/"stop motion" assignment.
I sat in the second row of the K-ROCK Centre in Kingston watching a demonstration of skateboarders and guys on BMX bikes.
I was shooting with the flash as the guys were flying in front of me. I had a narrow view in my 70-300 mm lens set at 70 mm on my Rebel XT.

In this photo, three guys magically appeared at the same time. The only adjustments I made were some levels in Lightroom, I swear!

That's a part of the shadow cast by the Unisphere in Flusing Meadows Park. The lines within the shadow are skateboard tracks.

Your first shot is awesome, MM.

star, thanks for jumping in. I started a thread of night shots, too...in case, i dunno, you wanted to throw some up there, too. ;)

Starkizzer 12-31-2010 05:23 PM

I didn't know if these shots would really fit into the night vision one since they are not night shots but indoor shots. They are from the Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland decorated for Nightmare Before Christmas. I figured abstract was more appropriate.

I really wish I could get a better picture of the snow angels, they are the thing I look forward to most when the ride gets converted. But the ride never stops. We keep hoping it will break down some time while we are at this point.

It's moss or something growing on a statue in the cemetery.

I think the trick is to track the moving object with your camera letting the background blur but keeping the object sharp.
But, having said that, I didn't do it in my parade pics. But the electric light parade was moving slowly.

Problem is, the angels are stationary, but the car we are in for the ride never stops moving. I think I managed to capture this one when the ride slowed momentarily. These were also taken with my point and shoot. Maybe we could get them better with smrt's big fancy camera.

Was that taken with any filters or digitally altered? Or is that pretty much taken as is?

Either way, I am impressed! :)

mixedmedia 07-21-2011 10:58 AM

Basically it is the result of my total lack of technical knowledge about cameras back in 2007, lol. It's an underexposed sunset shot over the Gulf of Mexico in Cedar Key, FL. The colors were really rich to start with but I enhanced it with a "Beth Orton" filter which made the colors more saturated and the darks darker.

Waste not, want not. :)
