details from a german boxcar.
A few weeks ago, I wrote in my blog about a WWII-era German boxcar that we came across on a trip to the library. I went back to take pictures of it, but the day was so pretty and the setting so banal that I only liked the detail shots I did. It's not clear whether this is an actual boxcar that carried prisoners to concentration camps or whether it is just typical of one. We couldn't get inside of it that day, but last week it was parked in front of my school and I was able to walk inside for a minute. It's very chilling - still impossible to wrap my head around the Holocaust.
the window... the only other picture I took that day that seems to tie in with the theme.

The textures of corrosion are mesmerizing.

thank you, gg, seems to be an ongoing theme with me lately...decay and corrosion. I love the abstraction and the beauty of it when you look close.

Where was (is) the boxcar? I am sure that there is a story on why it is there.

It was parked outside of our local library.
The boxcar is owned by the local Holocaust museum and from the postings on the door was acquired by them recently. I assume they are touring it around the area (to schools and libraries and such) to raise awareness. And it's pretty effective that way - standing inside you can't help but imagine what it must have been like, esp. as a parent. Otherwise, I don't know a lot about it.

no, the only time I had the opportunity to go inside I didn't have my camera with me...plus, it was at night. Standing inside made it very easy to project myself into that horrific situation, though. It's much more effective than reading stories or looking at photos from the Holocaust, which is probably the point.

This is a significant series, mixedmedia. Thanks.
In a very real way, we are "outside" the abominable reality of this massive object. We see its deterioration in time. And it is all strangely beautiful. We are farther and farther from the "inside" of the experience. Locked up. Sealed away. Time is good for something, after all.
