The Worlds Tallest Tower Opened Tonight
Burj Dubai (now renamed as Burj Khalifa) had its inauguration tonight about 2 hours ago and it was an amazing array of Fireworks, light and sound displays.
im yet to download my pics but ill do that once i get a chance. unfortunately ive been sick, so i decided to stay away and take pictures from far. This magnificent feat of engineering excellence breaches all boundaries. Dubai still has a long way to go in many respects, but as an engineering feat at 828m, twice as tall as the empire state building...wow. the 2nd tallest building stands at 501m. This thread is dedicated to what everyone here calls "The Burj" or translated from arabic, "The Tower" heres a few pics from the local paper

That looks pretty spectacular. I'm looking forward to your, dlish, since you're pretty handy with a camera too.

It sure is tall but I'm not sure it's all that beautiful. One the one hand I am impressed with the engineering on the other, it just looks like a big middle finger aimed at the rest of the world.
How are the interiors?

nomcat if you actually read my post you'll notice that i said that Dubai still needed a long way to go. i was referring to this and a few other things.
please feel free to start a thread to discuss in politics or GD if you wish, but not in photography. i have no issues. charl - i didnt work on The Burj - its tough trying to get in there. we did a lot of work around it, so i dont know what the finishes are like just yet. ill let you know once i go to the observation deck and level 120! but you're right, its not a beautiful masterpiece of a building. but when they started building they didn know exactly how high they could go, so it was always a WIP with a concept and goal. The stepped design is obviously the wide base it needs to stop it from overturning due to the live forces at 800m. TFP engineers most welcome to comment. i should have the pics up sometime today jazz, but a few forces worked against me 1) i lost my Cannon G9 camera. 2) i was a little further out that i'd like to have been due to the traffic jams in the area. 3) i was shooting with she-lish's small cannon camera, so my pics arent as good as i'd like unfortunately

You're right, photography isn't the place to discuss this... Over and out!

This is one of the things I sincerely love about this place--people from all over the world coming together to share with one another. I get to see all kinds of cool things. dlish, thanks for the pics. I really like no. 7.
There was a piece on the opening of the Burj Khalifa on public radio here yesterday; they said that the interior fittings were very simple/elegant and not as opulent/showy as one might see elsewhere in Dubai.
