and backtracking a little bit, BANKSY continues his rolling film tour in the states, and to promote this innovational creative piece of filmography, he is tagging all the different locales in which the screenings are being held.

Additional Banksy pieces spotted in the wild (clockwise from left):
Seattle, Detroit, San Francisco, Toronto.

Correction: about those Toronto pieces? Yeah, they're getting shafted.

"Famed British street artist Banksy has never done any work on Toronto streets before—at least not, it looks like, until now.

The alley on Tuesday morning. Photo by Nick Kozak/Torontoist.

Three new pieces in Banksy's distinctive style have popped up on walls in Toronto over the past two days: one's near Trinity Bellwoods Park, another's near Union Station, and a final one's around the Rogers Centre. (We've been asked to keep the exact locations private, lest "bad intentions" lead to them being chipped away and sold.)
"
They are not just being stolen... in an ironic twist, they're actually being defaced and tagged themselves.

(above: Chinatown; below: Central Square, Cambridge).

(as I've continually done, this is a progressing endeavor to update and detail where the newest "graffitic / street art" pieces done by BANKSY are appearing in North America, as a direct correlation to his new film, "Exit Through the Gift Shop".)

another installation in the nationwide tour:

(you can probably guess who this is by) seen in downtown Manhattan

and if you ever wondered for what reason this gigantic thing was there for...

it was probably just to liven up the neighborhood (created / installed in Soho, NYC the first go-around, near two years ago)

Thanks for telling us about that, Cynth. I haven't actually seen the piece in person (haven't been to NYC in the past 4 years) but I thought I still could have had a chance. I might have to do some research and see if the "other" giant Banksy rat is still up, though I think that one is in London.

I'm happy to oblige just a few minutes if it brings about lasting memories and insights. And when you say "awesome film", I assume that to mean you were witness to Banksy's new film, I suppose?

It's unreal in the way he almost created a new genre of filmmaking and marketmanship, just because he was being stalked by some French guy with a mission to interview him.

And apologies to those who may feel I'm making too much fuss, and giving too much exposure to any one Graffitic artist, but for 1) He's arguably the most renowned street artist, let alone actual "artist", worldwide right now (probably due to the fact his pieces can actually be seen in streets worldwide) coming up to 2) in that he is also one of the most "mysterious" personalities we have seen since Dali (or even Daft Punk) and finally 3) these graffiti/street art installations are actually beginning to spawn in nearly every Metropolitan area's backyards, so if you do get a chance, why not see what the fuss his message is actually about, I say.

Rammellzee, Graffiti Artist, Dies at 49 - ArtsBeat Blog - NYTimes.com

Quote:
Rammellzee, an early graffiti writer, hip-hop pioneer and performance artist whose style influenced the Beastie Boys and Cypress Hill, died Sunday in Far Rockaway, Queens, where he was raised. He lived in Battery Park City in Manhattan.

He was 49 and died after a long illness, said his wife, Carmela Zagari Rammellzee.

He became known in graffiti circles in the late 1970s and early 1980s for hitting the A train and other subway lines around Queens with his spiky-lettered work. He appeared in one of the most important graffiti and hip-hop films, Charlie Ahearn’s “Wild Style.” In 1983 his on-again-off-again friend, the painter Jean-Michel Basquiat, helped produce and illustrated the record cover for “Beat Bop,” a 12-inch single by Rammellzee and K-Rob that became one of Rammellzee’s best-known performances and a hip-hop touchstone. It became the unofficial theme song for Henry Chalfant and Tony Silver’s graffiti documentary “Style Wars.”

“He didn’t separate his fantastic work from his life,” Mr. Ahearn said. “So when he spoke to you, he often spoke in character and that could sometimes be upsetting.” He legally changed his name to Rammellzee when he was younger, Mr. Ahearn said. As for the name he was born with, Mr. Ahearn said that he knew it, but would keep it to himself, in keeping with his friend’s wishes.

He was an eccentric, outsize figure almost never photographed without wearing one of the elaborate science-fiction inspired masks and costumes that he made along with the sculpture and paintings that became the mainstays of his career in later years. He fashioned himself as an urban philosopher, whose overarching theory, which he called Gothic Futurism, posited that graffiti writers were trying to liberate the mystical power of letters from the strictures of modern alphabetical standardization, and had inherited this mission in part from medieval monks.
