Canon Rebel XS lens compatibility?

Howdy Kids,
I have been experimenting with my Canon G2 replacement and am wondering what type of lenses work with the Canon Rebel XS/1000D.
Online research tells me this: Canon EF lens mount, Canon EF-S lens mount. What does this cover, and what are the options with the older manual focus SLR lenses?
I would prefer to be able to use Ebay or other sources for cheaper older lenses, as both a good macro and zoom are on my "someday" list.
There should/likely will be a thread showing some of the TFP friendly shots I have taken soon - most of my subjects so far have been either furry or 9 and younger.
Any advice is greatly appreciated, my experience with even entry level DSLR's is admittedly limited.

My understanding is that older manual focus lenses are FD mount and not compatible with the EF mount. Nikon has basically never changed their mount, although some adjustments have to be made for mirror location with lenses from before 1980. In other words with a Nikon camera you can use older manual focus Nikon lenses, but with a Canon you can't.

absolutlutely lovely to hear, but not much of shock. I was pondering the merits of the Nikon D40/D60 and the Canon models - my previous camera being Canon most likely was a big part of going this route. I did thoroughly read reviews of several models on dpreview.com though before buying.

I was under the impression that all canon lenses work on all canons. As in the older SLR lenses work on the new DSLR bodies.

However this I know to be true: The EF-S mounts DO NOT work on full frame cameras (5D or better).

Speed. every lens listed at the-digital-picture.com you can use.

You can also use Nikon Lenses, and various companies with a converter...but that's more super enthusiast.

You can get an adapter for FD-mount lenses as well. In fact, for most major brand dSLR cameras, you can get adapters to and from almost any major brand mount, including Nikkor to EF.

Not quite.
they're restricted by flange-to-film plane distance.
The Nikon has a long distance, allowing canon users to fit an adaptor to nikon lenses and still get usable focus.
Nikon can't use canon lenses without losing focus ability.
