Shots from a lake

These were taken last night at a little lake near where I am working. A guy I work with has a little boat and we took it for a rip. At about 2AM a wicked thunderstorm rolled in and i tried my hand at some lightning photography with the new camera. I am still getting the hang of it so its not very good just yet.

I missed most of the good sunset as I was backing the trailer onto the launch while buddy parked the boat on the trailer.

I missed some amazing shots of lightning. I was not really sure which Fstop to use or ISO so many of the pics were far too over-exposed. The lightning was so bright many of the pictures look like they were taken in broad daylight.

Lovely colors in those first three shots - do a panorama!!

And as for the lightning shots, I thought they were generally done with 10 second exposures? Seems pretty hard to do such a long exposure on a moving boat.

Beautiful sunset lake shots.

I don't know if there are many things as relaxing as being on a boat in a calm lake during sunset.

Thanks for sharing.

Like manic_skafe mentioned, take your first 3 shots and crop them so they look panoramic. that always makes them more dramatic. You have some good shots to work from. Give it a try.

Now that is a nice crop. The next question to ask yourself is, what's more important in that shot, the sky or the lake?

Love the sky, but i also love that reflection on the water. Clouds and water are 2 of my favorite things! Feel free to give me all the suggestions you can! I really appreciate them.

As I look at it, the clouds are nice, but the reflection of the sun on the water is more striking in the image. that being the case, I'd crop so the horizon shows more water than sky, putting the horizon about 2/3 of the way up in the image instead of halfway.

This is lovely.

And I'm not much of a fan of "the rules" but the rule of thirds is almost always appropriate when it comes to shots like these.

Yea the rule of thirds is generally what I try and strive for with landscape pictures, I feel that it gives them a very balanced and pleasing look. This picture is more like a 2/5ths though.

I would crop the rest but I am on a crappy work laptop and all I have to crop is Infraview and I find it to be a terrible tool.

I am a newbie photographer too. These tips might help for taking shots of lightning.
