The Outport Tour
Yesterday, being one of those rare spring days in Newfoundland where it wasn't snowing, sleeting or raining, we decided to drive around the penninsula and look at some sights.
Here's me at the road sign to the village of Dildo http://farm1.static.flickr.com/153/4...7370c102_b.jpg http://farm1.static.flickr.com/150/4...7488a920_b.jpg The Village of Dildo http://farm1.static.flickr.com/150/4...cdf256da_b.jpg An abandoned house in Grate's Cove http://farm1.static.flickr.com/154/4...e0cb4c9c_b.jpg A really abandoned house in Grate's Cove http://farm1.static.flickr.com/173/4...a32dbf19_b.jpg http://farm1.static.flickr.com/168/4...32c18ec5_b.jpg http://farm1.static.flickr.com/175/4...0686eca6_b.jpg http://farm1.static.flickr.com/186/4...13ec28d7_b.jpg http://farm1.static.flickr.com/181/4...d221ee84_b.jpg http://farm1.static.flickr.com/172/4...48b64328_b.jpg The Famous village of Brigus http://farm1.static.flickr.com/188/4...7e0bb482_b.jpg |
I've never been to Newfoundland but these shots remind me of why I want to visit.

This coming from someone that lives in a hot, desolate place. :) |
When I see the environmentalists up in arms about things like the seal hunt, I think about places like this and dozens more like it out around the island (and some are even more isolated than this - at least this one had a road), where people have hung on for hundreds of years, and eeked out a living. it's where their family came from and for them it's home. When you live in a place like this, and have no desire to live anywhere else, it tends to put things in perspective.
