My 2 cents on the beginner DSLR: I have a Canon 350D (Digital Rebel to the Americans). I bought it last year when heading for my second posting in South Sudan. I went Canon over Nikon on the recommendation of a photo-journalist I met in Sudan. She swears the Canon hardware is better at keeping out dust. Not just from the lens, but from the actual sensor, etc... So there's that to consider. I think I've put about 2000 pictures through the camera since July last year, using a 1 gig card, shooting mostly RAW, and shooting through the kit lens (a slight bit of vignetting when you have it all the way down at 24mm for wide angle, but otherwise a great lens IMHO) or through a Canon EF 70-300 zoom. I shot a lot of scenery, and a lot of motion, and have no complaints. Only challenge has been shooting well in low light. My next purchase will be, I think, a fixed focal length, 1.4 aperture, lens. But so far, using a more sensitive ISO setting has helped a great deal.
OH, and I have no experience with blowing up and printing digital photos, so I can't tell you anything there. So in conclusion - the 350D is a great camera for a beginner (ie me), if you can find it. Also, apparently you should stay clear of the 400D (that just came out recently) - apparently the processor is maxxed out, making the camera quite slow, and the housing isn't as solidly built as the predecessor. This is all hearsay, and I have no evidence to back it up. I'm just passing on an opinion, so don't lynch me. Happy hunting, and when you find your camera of choice, Happy Snapping!
